High idle

:banghead: ok i have a 1988 chevy caprice and its having a number of problems.....one when i stop it still idling high.....two when i start it it low idles and cuts of i have to start it a number of times.......here are sum thing u might want to kno about the car........no cat there is just a straight pipe to the muffler..........needs a manifold gasket............i use mobile one oil n it doesnt need a oil change for about 1500 miles...............new ign wires............new rotor.........new fuel filter.......... vacum lines missing from the two pipes that come up like r's on each side of the engine...........pollution pulley frozen someone please help :banghead:

Jack up the radiator cap and slide a new car under it and everything should be ok.
Seriously, when you have a bollixed up mess like yours it is nearly impossible to diagnose online. Most of us don't go along with the removal of pollution systems which may have added to your problems.
I would start with capping off any open vacuum lines. Check the carb base gasket and EGR valve (if you have one) for vacuum leaks.

With that many problems, I, in that situation, would reluctantly just shell out the money and get it fixed by a shop. Thats just me though.

One thing to remember about this site is that some members do not have that luxury and cannot afford to take it to a shop. That is why they come here looking for assistance in trying to do it themselves first and maybe take it to a shop as a last resort.

A car that has most of the pollution equipment bypassed or otherwise compromised is next to impossible to diagnose and recommend a fix for online.
If you go to a competent shop, they will either not touch it or give you a ballpark price on the needed repairs. I'd suggest that you be sitting down when they hand you the estimate. Be at least prepared to pay for an hour of diagnostic fees.
If you go to a not so competent shop, they will put your repair on the clock and take you over the high hurdles.
These are the scenarios which I think are fair in your case, good luck.
