where are you from. Here in utah we have a frew freeways in the midle of nowere where you can let it open.

I don't know what the max speed of a V6 is but the I4's are governor limited at 110 even though i had only 4500 rpm with plenty left.

WRONG!

if you have a non sport package V6 it is governed around 120 but if you have a sport package you have no speed limiter.

Im speaking stock, i can exceed the stock fuel cutoff now! Which is around 115mph to 120mph. Just takes a chip! So no im not wrong, when speaking stock.... thank you!

i know for a fact that the 2001 and 2002 sport package cougs have no speed limiter. i'm not sure about the 99and 2000's they might have had a limiter either way. but i know i hit 130 with my stock 2001 and it didn't cut out there thats just where i gave up. and i dont have a chip yet i will be getting one after i get my headers.

after doing a little research on NECO. i found that you have been cursed with a messed up ECU program a few sport package owners have reported having a speed limiter and a few non sport cougars have not had a speed limiter. i would look into getting the ECU reflashed. talk to your dealer about it. DO NOT tell them you want it fixed b/c of speed limiter make something else up.

b/c if you have a sport package you should NOT have a speed limiter.

This is kinda Ot, but Sunday i raced my friends v8 cougar(the old coug).
No contest!!! BTW how much hp does those things have? From takeoff I just pulled on him like 4 cars. I'm not stock though and he was. I did think I was gonna loose because I had lost to a Supercharged t bird once and I thought the Cougar would have some balls because it was a RWD v8. Anyway I walked away w/ a victory and $20

Hmmmm, im a Neco member! What is your user name? And yes you may be correct about the years(speed limiter), but not for sure since i dont own the year you do! I wouldnt go any futher than 130mph because the MAX the motor will take is 137mph, be carefull! I have my own diagnostic equipment and havnt seen any probs yet, never heard of getting your ecu reflashed, ive heard of reflashing the chip.

i be cougar4life on NECO as well i dont post a whole lot. just once in a while. and you can get your ECu reflashed or reprogramed or whatever they do to it.

and i 137 MPH the most the engine can take? hmmm i haven't heard about that b4. something new for me to research.

oh wait you have an MTX i have ATX they are geared diferent so i think the ATX can get up to like 140 something.

i would trust some of the smarter NECO members b4 motortrend. some of the guys on NECO know more about cougars than i do about my own mother.

At exactly 100 mph, my rpm suddenly dropped. I wondered if the car had a governor, so I called Mercury dealers. Two said it didn't, two said it did, although they didn't know what the speed was. So I got on the web and found this thread. Seems the standard 2000 Cougar 2.5L is limited to 100 mph (at least mine is).

That is impossible... I have a 2000 Cougar 2.5L (auto:bloated:) and I do about 120 everyday home from school and I've gone about 130 something before I started to slow down for fucking Chicago traffic. I have heard that they top out at 147.

Yeah....i'd have to agree with that one. They do seem to know alot over on the Neco boards, well... select few do. But almost each year of the Cougar has something small different about the year before so i cant really say for sure whats up with his car. I have heard of peoples tach and gauges being off and that could cause some confusion. But seriously happy-man id get your car checked.

5th: 0.77 143 (drag limited)
Reverse: 3.42

Transaxle: CD4E

I'm not sure if I have 'the sport package' on my '99, but I hit 122mph on I-37 heading towards Corpus Christi one day, before a gut feeling told me to slow down. Good thing too---State trooper was on the other side of a hill.
