auto trans will not go forward

hi, i bought the car with a broken transmission from a lady. the car 'will not' drive forward, doesnt matter if its in L , 2 , or Drive. the car will only rev when the gas is pressed. the car reverses though. what is wrong with the transmission? i would like to know if i can fix it. thx a bunch everyone

Off the top of my head - there is a problem with the forward clutch - either in the clutch itself or in the related oil circuit. Worn clutch plates, or the oil seal rings around the oil pump stator are some possibilities.

My guess is that the trans will have to be disassembled to some extent to find out what is going on and to fix. If it were me I would start by taking out the valve body and looking for problems. If that does not yield anything then this looks like a rebuild to me.
