1990 buick regal 3.1
I was racing friday night at my local track and came into a problem. I went to line up at starting line and car wouldnt stay running unless i was on the gas. Then one lap into the race i got spun around and car just died. motor cranks over fine with spark and gas is getting up to rail with plenty of power. just wont run. car will fire and run sometimes for like ten seconds with a shot of starting fluid. makes no sense to me. any ideas???

What is the fuel pressure at the rail. "Gas is getting to the rail with plenty of power" does not tell us much! If it starts with "starting fluid" it must have spark, so your problem seems to be fuel related, it could also be the TPS, MAF, FPR, MAP, or ECM. Need further diagnostics here. :uhoh:

Which of those sensors run the injecters? They arent working? Someone at work said his Corsica did the same and it was the CAM sensor. He said it is located on firewall side of motor. Sound right?

The Multi-port Fuel Injection (MFI) system is controlled by an Electronic Control Module (ECM) which monitors engine operations and generates output signals to provide the correct air/fuel mixture, ignition timing and engine idle speed control. Input to the control unit is provided by an oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor, detonation sensor, hot film air mass sensor and throttle position sensor. The ECM also receives information concerning engine rpm, road speed, transmission gear position, power steering and air conditioning.
The 1990 3.1L does not have a cam sensor, only a CKP sensor that tells the ECM where the engine is so the ECM can control spark and the fuel injectors
Theres either a connection that is bad (maybe from you racing your car, engine bucking...) OR your computer went bad. I've replaced my 1990 Regals computer twice for no start scenarios....
Hmm, maybe you could jump your aldl connectors a&b terminals to see if the computer checks out okay, a code 22
Still, what is your actual fuel pressure? Befgre the car is started while ignition is on pressure should be 24-40 psi and should fall to 28-32 psi while idling.

I would suspect the crank position sensor, (or the wiring between it and the ICM). Your car doesn't have a cam position sensor (the 3.1 didn't use one until 93/94). I also agree with n0rt0n, that it's very possible the ECM is the issue. The ECM's in these cars are mounted under the hood, and have water intrusion issues (especially if the OEM service number is 1277727).

just got car back from mechanic and he said there is no injector pulse. he suggested(like u guys) it was the ecm or broken wire. i tried 2 different ecms with no results. where should i start to check for broken wires? I can follow the injector wires from ecm to rail. Should i just replace all of them just to be done with it? They have 2 connector plugs right before ecm that will make it simple. or is there an easier way to check???

You can check the harness from the crank sensor to the ICM with a DMM for continuity. It's a 2 wire harness with yellow and purple wires. IF that checks ok, then you may need to pull the upper plenum off and do an injector balance test. If you find one way out of spec with the rest, leave that injector unplugged, put the UIM back on temporarily (as long as the UIM gaskets didn't fall apart) and start the car. If it starts (it'll miss because it's running on 5 cylinders), the off injector is dead shorted and taking the others out with it.
