will not run after start

please be kind this is my first post

1992 eclispe 5sp manual no ac no power stering 1.8lt 185,000 miles

ok the car will start then when you release the key to the run/on position it dies if you keep the key in the start positon the car runs but of course the starter grinds. i checked the ign switch and It seemed to switch dc as the book shows. ????? I was able to jumper the ign switch (2-5) so it acked like the starter was running then I pulled the solonod wire on the starter just to get it home. Any ideas???
