Spam is scary...

Heard a report on morning radio this morning about spam. There's a woman who owns a company that sends out spam advertisement emails. I think its called Research Data Solutions. She has sent out as many as 60,000,000 (that's 60 million) such emails, in the course of a single month. She has also figured out that if she gets just 100 responses for every 10,000,000 emails she sends out, she makes a profit.

Compare that to companies that send out catalogs in the mail and such. They expect to make sales on between 1 and 4% of the catalogs they mail out. She can make a profit on only a 0.00001% return. ...She expects to make about $250,000 this year!!!

I am so sick of spam. They really need to pass some laws against it because its %##$ anoying.

They need an e-mail list like PA's "No Call List" so that if you tell them to unsubscribe you and they continuously send you more crapmail it's THEM who gets in trouble...

The good news is that apparently 26 states have passed legislature limiting in one way or another spam emails. However, there is as of yet nothing that has passed on a federal level… let’s hope that changes soon!

On some levels I should be happy for this woman, single mom entrepreneur, blah blah blah, but the idea that she gets to pull in a quarter million for pissing people off in this manner… that is such bullshit. Nobody ever said capitalism was perfect, I guess :rolleyes:

yeah, i read an article about her on slashdot.org yesterday. I don't have a problem with her wanting to make some money and I don't mind the spam because I filter it all out (3 years of defining filtering rules for outlook and now yahoo! mail has made my inbox 95% spam free). Hell, I would do what she was doing if I knew how and had the money to start the business.

ok, just had an idea. this is very similar to my tactic for dealing with junk mail (which is to put as much stuff into their pre-paid return envelope to make it as heavy as possible and send it back to them. Costs them an arm and a leg and is just a plain hassle for them) But, with the spam thing, someone should find this woman's e-mail, snail mail, and phone number and everytime you get a peice of spam send her something back and gice her a call and tell her to fuck off. Cuold be fun if you really have the drive to do it.

People making money off annoying people? Shit, thats most talking heads on TV.

I will gladly send anyone here $50 through Paypal if they blow that place up. :D Anyone care to add to the pot?
