1998 GP shift problem

Anybody out there having this problem? My son has a 98 GP and is on his way back from Illinois as I am typing this this. He called to tell me that the battery light came on in the cluster and the car acts as if there is a lack of power. It is running at 3000 rpm at 60 mph and acts as if it will not shift into overdrive. He stopped for a few minutes to see if it would reset something and tried again. He said he got up to 60 and the r's are still at 3000 but the battery light has gone off.

Any suggestions as to what should be checked?

Is the "Check Engine" lamp on while the engine is running?

No, the check engine light did not come on. After shutting the car down for approx. 5 min. my son said he started it up, got up to 60 mph and the car reacted as it is supposed to, although the battery light came on a few times for 10 seconds or so and then it ran fine the rest of the way home with no problems. Loose connection somewhere maybe?
