Ebay Intake Advice!

Hi, this is an intake + air filter + intake tubing that I found on ebay, and I was wondering if people could give me some advice as to whether this looks like it checks out for a decent intake. I like the color a lot and I keep hearing on these forums to just get a cheap intake, because an air filter is an air filter.
Also, if anyone has had knowledge of Bomz Racing, that'd be great if you could give me some of that knowledge. Thanks to all for helping me buy an intake for my 3000GT.

Thats very similar to the intake I have. Yo can probly find indentical ones even cheaper. And personally I wouldnt use the crap plastic 3" adapter that comes with it. Id get a 4.5" metal/aluminum adapter and filter.

Nice intake but could def find one cheaper. Any intake will do, they're all the same. They don't add any horsepower really, but allows the engine to breathe better resulting in better milage, and supports well for future mods.

hmm, sometimes when buying the cheap intakes you run into issues with the vacume lines.. and sometimes not..
for the 3s, I would suggest either spending money for the k + N or going super cheap with the MAF adapter and filter. The stock tubing isnt that restrictive and that way you can keep your resonator (black box attached to intake pipe) soem people say it protects the engine a little, some say it does notheing lol.
but as captain planet once said... "The choice is yours." :cwm27:

Whoever says it protects the engine isnt very smart. Its ONLY a resonator. It quiets the intake

well few more questions.
1.) this air filter that I posted in my first post, is this a wet filter system or a dry filter system. as in, like a K&N filter, would i need to oil this, or would I just be able to dunk it in water, possibly with some sort of solution, let it dry overnight, and put it back in in the morning. that's what I want if possible, I don't want a wet system because that is too many variables for me to have to worry about putting too much or too little oil on my filter.
2.) would a 4.5 inch adapter paired with a 4.5 inch filter really make that much of a difference in engine breathabilty versus the 3 inch filter and adapter pair? I say this because isn't the intake pipe that's in there possibly only a 3" tube and that no matter how big of a filter/adapter you're putting on it, it's still going to need to have all that excess 1.5 inches more be crammed into the pipe, or would it just allow it to breathe easier. my thoughts would be that a bigger filter and adapter wouldn't do that much more than a 3" filter. anyone have any advice on this? thanks.

A filter is a filter. The engine will draw in as much air as it needs. It just doesnt have to work as hard at it if there's not a huge box there restricting it. As for wet and dry systems, dry is more popular. Dry is much easier to maintain. Wet systems don't prevent particles from entering the air.
As for fitament issues, that intake I posted will fit perfect, how do I know? I own it. And liquidpunk, I'm not sure what you mean by vacuum lines... we only have one tube going to the rear bank, and that's the PCV breather hose. Buy the cheap-o one, you won't regret it.

The 4.5 inch aluminum adapter seals much better than the plastic 3" adapter most of these kits come with. Thats why I suggested that change.

I hadnt gotten a cheap intake for my 3k but I had one for my 240sx and the vacuum lines were the wrong sizes and it ended up being a pain in the a$$.:banghead:

so this is definitely considered as a dry air filter? as in I don't have to oil it correct?
and you're saying that the 3" adapter as well as the 3" filter that goes on it is not good enough? that the plastic adapter is apparently crap? what do you mean, like, does this mean that I'm going to not get as good of performance because the air seeps out of the adapter when going through the mass air flow sensor? because if I could, I'd rather just keep the 3" adapter and filter, unless there would be a significant enough reason to get a bigger adapter and filter. Any specific reason why to get a bigger one, more air in the intake housing perhaps? Like what justifies getting a bigger one, and if getting a bigger one, why would it be worth the money.
thanks for your input.

I have a 3 inch adapter and have no problems at all. If you want to, seal it off better if it's gonna be a problem. A dry filter would be one you just put on without using some type of solution. Wet would be the opposite. Go dry, it's easier.
As for performance, there is no performance... a cold air intake does virtually nothing performance wise, other than allow your engine to breathe, and support bigger mods. Get a cheap intake, plain and simple. Get one that comes with a filter already and a MAF adapter (almost all do), and you're good to go.

The plastic adapter is known not to seal correctly. You may think its sealed, but its most likely not. The aluminum adapter has never had any issues sealing.

well from the looks of it this filter looks dry, correct?
and if it doesn't seal correctly, that's meaning that my MAF sensor is going to read the air coming in wrong and cause possibly poor idle/lower fuel economy, or would it just not be able to suck in as much air and performance wouldn't be as good.

It's a dry system, and the MAF comes after the adapter so it won't affect a reading on the amount of air coming in. It really wont hinder or increase performance. Don't worry it wont hurt anything. I get 28MPG.
Atomicornpuffs
08-18-2007, 02:47 AM
wow. you really get 28 mpg?!?!?! that seems quite good to say the least. do you think that has anything to do with a cold air intake you say you have X2Xtreme360? because you say in your mods that you have a cold air intake system, but from the looks of it, and I could be wrong, would this be more of a short-ram intake, maybe not even that very much because it's going in the same place as the stock airbox, just now it's an open air element. and when you put it on, you noticed after a while the better fuel economy, any idea what you were getting before for fuel economy? cuz I think I'm running about 21 right now, but my car is in need of a bit of a tune up with a clean air filter (well, soon to be open air element) and then also I want to clean my fuel injectors and fuel rails with Gumout Fuel System Cleaner. any thoughts on your great fuel economy would be greatly appreciated. I'm a college guy, and I need to save all the money I can. Course getting a 3000GT probably wasn't the best idea for that, but what can you do? :smooch:
X2Xtreme360
08-18-2007, 02:30 PM
Yea it's a short ram. I use the term interchangeably b/c a cold air gets you nothing more or less than a short ram. I'm sure an open element could get you 1, maybe 2 miles per gallon. But regular tune-ups do a world of difference as well.

a 3s DOHC motor should be gettign about 25 mpg under normal driving, tune up is your best bet, plugs, wires, FUEL FILTER!, and with a high flow filter should get you to 28 or so, (also depends on how you drive)
I ended up getting a throttle body spacer and that actually gave me another mile or 2 a gallon, im getting about 29-31 when driving around town, not too bad for a 15 year old car lol. But seriously, fuel filters are often overlooked when people do tune ups so i'd be sure to change that out if i were you. It's kind of a pain, but well worth it.
you can also save money by doing it yourself, there are step by step instuctions with pics on the websites www.stealth316.com and www.vr4stealth.com
definatly change your plugs yourself! Its pretty easy although it takes time and i dont trust most mech. to actually change the back ones if you take it somewhere!

hi, I just bought and intake off of ebay, the one that I put in my original post, I had no troubles putting it in, and a funny little thing at least was that I don't know when the person I bought it from last changed the air filter on the car, but when I opened up the air box there were a bunch of leaves in it. That might hinder air flow huh? LOL. but anyways, my question is that when I put the filter in, I disconnected the battery to have the O2 sensor reset, and then I turned on the engine. Everything seems to run fine, and now my engine makes a bit louder of a noise, but now I saw that my "CHECK ENGINE" light is on all the time. I know this has to do with my new Open Air Filter I put in, I just have no idea how to turn that off/if it means anything. Any help would be great. thanks! :)

Thanks for the link. I knew about Stealth 316 but I didn't know about VR4 Stealth. :)
Also, if you want a good dry filter that is comperable to a K&N AEM makes some new ones that are really good and flow well. Best of all, no regular oilings.

Atomiccornpuffs, your CEL is on? That makes no sense the intake would have nothing to do with that. Did you forget to plug the MAS in or something?
