:wtf:

Well its fuel pump time again this time on my running aroung ride '01 Malibu V6 Just wanted to know any of the little secrets on getting the tank out and stuff to look out for like short lines that break fittings (like on Blazers) or any other thing to make it easy for a first timer on a Malibu. Thanks in advance

:runaround: I recently replaced the fuel pump in my 03 Malibu and here is what I learned.
If you can get the back end up off the ground, it makes things a lot easier if your doing it yourself. Make sure the tank is empty or close to it (12 gallons of gas weighs alot!) First thing I did is undo the filler hose and the evap can. Then, unclip the lines leading to the fuel filter and the return line from the engine. (yes they just snap open and snap shut.) Undo the exhaust shield on the drivers side so that you can move stuff out of the way. Then undo the straps holding the tank to the car then drop. As you drop, make sure you unplug the gas gauge sensor. Once out in the open, you will see on the top of the tank where the fuel pump is. If I recall correctly, simply turn it and pull it out. Installation is the opposite of reverse. If you get stuck like I did with a half tank of gas, I found that a peice of plywood to distribute the pressure of a floor jack is really helpful in raising and lowring the tank. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the reply. I am waiting for a cooler day to tackle the job been in the 100s here in the Tarheel and I ain't in no hurry to have a heat stroke. So the first cloudy or rainy day I will pop that new one in so I can have my parts runner back.

When the tanks down before you open the tank blow off any dirt that is on top before opening becuase if you just open it and dirt or whatever gets in it might just end up in the motor

On other cars I use the filter connection to drain the tank I have been working on cars for so long I have fuel fittings from days gone by and hose remnants I put the hose into a container and compressed air in the fill tube to get it started and I have the car up in the air a long way up so I can get under it. I also have aquired several plastic gas containers so I can drain over 12 gallons in 5, 2 1/2, 2 and 1 gallon containers kids never run out of gas near home so they keep buying them

A note for siphoning gas out of the tank. Anyone who has tried this has probably found that there is an anti-siphoning device to make this a really "fun" job.

This is easiest to do by removing the filler hose from the tank itself, and inserting the siphoning hose directly in from there. There is still a little device that will make this difficult with a wide hose, but with some manuvering you can get it in alright. While I was not able to siphon it all out (about 2-3 gallons left in there), it sure made it easier to drop it down.

i dono if you know this but those fuel pumps are lifetime guarented they just won't pay for the labor.and if it sais limited lifetime that still means liftime as long as you still own the car.
