It's going to be around $2500 or more, depending on who does it. Most of that price is the labor in removing and re-installing the engine.

depending on if your planning on doing it yourself.....to have the heads cleaned and checked for cracks is going to cost about 300 plus depending on the shop you choose....then...and i suggest...you get a valve job while the heads are off your looking at more $. i just did a head job on a 99 ford taurus. little more pricey than i thought after the machine shop. make sure you get a quote from the machine shop before going through with it. caddys tend to be a lot more expensive. get a quality head gasket set from a local parts shop not a autozone. buy a felpro set if possible or a gm product. if the body is clean and the interior is also and you like the car i say go for it, especially if you can do the work yourself....might want to consider a timing belt while your in there...good luck

also...you need to ask why the head gasket blew out?...the taurus i replaced was due to an overheating engine....which was a result from a bad coolant pressure tank...another 50 bucks for parts. bad head gasket could be a from a warped head or many other problems other than a faulty gasket....and most likely the car was overheated causing the faulty gasket...and possibly the warped head....be carefull. im not sure how common these blocks overheat...or why. if the price is right for the car i say go for it...but be advised that caddy parts and labor is not cheap...and the northstar is not easy to work on for the do it yourselfer...unless yur very brave and have a lot of time. im new to these motors myself...id consider a car with a head gasket if it was worth it....just food for thought...hope it helps
