13 MPG (how bout you?)

I have a 2000 Sport with 66K Miles. I tested my gas mileage three times and I have averaged about 13 MPG in the city. Is this normal? I have also recently been having overheating problems, especially since our high today was 101 with a heat index of 110. I replaced the fan relay and thermostat, which helped, but now I need a fan clutch. After driving a few miles it will run hot when I sit still for a while (engine was 260 tested with an IR thermometer). I am guessing the heat has hurt my gas mileage, but wanted to see what everyone was getting. Also, has anyone found any mods (NO GIMMICKS) that actually help with gas mileage.

Jeeps are not know for good gas mileage
Try to change the air cleaner and spark plugs
Change the fan clutch and the thermostat
Depending on where you live, reduce the anti-freeze percentage in the summer

Gas is to expensive to test mpg for me but I guess I'm averaging between 12 and 15 but i also have a 3 inch lift and 31" mudders too.

new filter, plugs, thermostat, tires are properly inflated, just had alignment done. i knew jeeps had bad gas mileage, but didnt know it was this bad, lol. im hoping that when the overheating problem is fixed the mileage will be better. think im gonna get a tranny cooler too.

13-16 mpg in an urban setting....freeways and stop and go. 1997 model year with automatic and 29 inch tires.

My little 2.5L 5-speed manual gives me about (guesstimated) 15-17 city and about 17-19 highway... if I drive nicely.

If you're doing pure city driving then you're probably right in the ballpark. Sounds like you have 4wd. A major part of the problem are the rear axle ratios on these vehicles. My 2000 Sport has a 3.55 final drive ratio and I believe if you have the trailer towing option there is an even lower (higher numerically) final ratio. This contributes to the somewhat "spritely" performance from the antedeluvian lo-po inline six and unfortunately to very dismal MPG performance.
High engine temps can force the engine computer to dial back the advance curve (to prevent knocking) and as such decrease output...this has the double wammy of lower power and a higher mash factor on the go pedal.
