Torque converter circuit

I have a 2000 LeSbre and yesterday while driving between 40 & 50 mph the car would buck really bad when shifting. The amber "service engine soon" light came on and stayed on until I stopped in the evening. The next day the "SES" light was still on until I was on the Interstate and set the cruise at 70mph then the light went off and has stayed off.
I had them check the code at an Advance Auto Parts and it came up as "torque converter circuit stuck open or on". Is this a switch or solenoid that needs to be replaced. The AAP didn't act like they could help me.:screwy:
Is this something I can fix, or does it need to go to a transmission shop, or a standard shop?
Looking for some suggestions and thanking all of you in advance for the help!!

Before wasting money on getting the tranny diagnosed and/or repaired how many miles are on the car? When was the last tranny service such as pan drop with new ATF and a screen filter?

The DTC normally generated for TCC stuck on is P0742. What DTC did you get?

The TCC circuit controls a TCC-PWM solenoid located under the left side cover assembly.

The tranny was flushed and new filter installed at 105,711. The car has 153K miles now. I was coming back from vacation when this happened and when I left the Advance Auto Parts Store I failed to ask him what the DTC was.:banghead: I called back after I was on the road and asked but he didn't remember.

Can you be more specific on the location of the solenoid? Is there a way to test it (on or off the car)? Does anyone have a picture of the solenoid?

From the 20 way connector plug to the tranny you can ohm out the solenoid coil resistance. I'll post a link with the values as soon as I get a chance. See pic below for location.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO!! Now I have to ask a stupid question. Where is the 20 way connector plug? Is this under the hood or under the car near the transmission and are the letters on the plug so I can see them or will I need a guide?

The 20 way connector is the tranny umbilical plug. All electrical signals input and output there. Located at the top left (driver's) side of the tranny. Should be a gray connector plug. Yes there are letters on the case connector and vehicle harness connector.

Thanks again! I will confirm the code when I can get somewhere that can plug in a computer. If the code matches what you think it should, I will take a reading at the plug.
