I think I need a new car starter in my car. When I turn the key all I hear is a click and the battery is working fine. I need to know how to install a car starter in a 97' Dodge Caravan? If anyone has any ideas or if anyone knows what else it might be please let me know?

If you haven't already, jump start the van using jumper cables and another car. If it starts, it's a good sign the battery is weak. Just because lights come on when you turn the key doesn't mean the battery is fully charged.

If the battery is good, turn the key and tap the starter with a hammer. If it starts, you'll either need to replace the solenoid contacts in the starter or replace the starter.

Using a volt meter check for 12vdc at the starter connection where the smaller diameter wire connects. If it's there when you turn the key to start, you likely have a bad starter.

Here's how you troubleshoot and change a starter:http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1a/3b/0a/0900823d801a3b0a/repairInfoPages.htm

Check the battery posts and cables and make sure there is no corrosion them , these can get an almost invisible high resistance film on them , get a good post brush and clean the inside of the battery cables and then the battery posts too until they are shiney.

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply. The battery is good, but it is definitely the starter.
