Cooling Fan 1 Issue

Hey everyone... Great resource here for the DIY-ers...

I've got a 2003 Cavalier... 2.2 with a/c...

I've got a problem with the cooling fan... it won't come on even when the a/c is on... and when I'm in heavy stop/go traffic or waiting in a drive thru line... the temperature starts climbing and the a/c blows warm...
As long as I'm moving, the car runs right around 195-200... and the a/c works fine...

The check engine light is on... an auto parts store did a code read for me... it came back as P0480-Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit... I replaced the 30 amp fuse and the cooling fan relay in the fusebox under the hood on the drivers side. But still no fan. Is that error code p0480-Cooling Fan 1 possibly in a different location... I'd certainly appreciate any help or advice. Thanks

You're going to need to check all the wiring involved in that circuit for continuity as well as check that the fan actually works. Need to be more through.:smooch:

note that in cavaliers (as i have the same problem minus the check engine light)... the cooling fan doesnt come on until your at quite a bit higher tempature than normal operating temp. if you had no other choices and couldnt fix it you could use the mod under performance i believe. Its the coooling fan bypass mod and allows a switch to be installed so you can turn the fan on whenever you want as the cavs dont turn it on themselves untilll it is hot hot hhot.

Thanks ChemMan... I did a little more digging... see if this info can help... I had used one of those crappy thin wired fuses... and decided to try a new one... when I put in a new 30 amp fuse... the fan started, ran fine for about 15-20 seconds... then blew the fuse again... I tried with an even thicker wired fuse... did the same thing... so the fan is operational... but it blows the fuse. Short in the wire? Bad Connection? Bad Fan motor? any suggestions?

Yep, definitely a short somewhere. Just don't try that again, you could start a fire and burn your car to the ground!:eek: Start at the relay and work your way toward the fan, looking for damaged insulation.

disconect the fan ,run a fused (Correct Amp) jumper wire direct to battery ,see if it blows the fuse. If it does you`ve found your problem
