Mine did this awhile ago, and was in fail safe mode. Something came unhooked. Sorry I can't be of any more help!

Doesn the shifter indicator say PRND3L? IF so it is a 4 speed transmission.

It is going into What is called the limp mode.

What engine?
How many miles?
Last time transmission fluid and transmission filter was changed?
Check transmission fluid level.
Make sure battery cable ends are shiney clean.
Check all grounds.
Check ground wire on transmission ( Look for a wire going to trans from wiring harness approxiametly in the strater area)
Check all connections to transmission input and output sensors for looseness or corrosion.
Check for moisture in the solenoid pack connector(This connector holds moisture, try and apply electronic grease to help prevent moisture build up.)
Use ATF +3 or ATF +4 Transmission fluid only

Look at these links for more info on trans:

Hope this helps

Have you checked the transmission ground strap, was there any moisture in the solenoid pack connector?
You may need to go to a transmission shop to get transmission codes to help you out. Could be electrical or solenoid pack problems.

there was a small amount of transmission fluid.

Are you saying there was trans fluid in the electrical connector for the solenoid pack? If so is there a leaking cooler line. If there is any kind of fluiid in the connector clean dry and apply electronic grease as the moisture will cause elctrical problems<. I worked on a 95 that had moisture in there once cleaned and dryed it has not failed since.
