It's a sad sad day. I finally decided that I need to get out of debt and to do it, I'm going to sell a lot of my stuff to get there. With selling my Nikon D50 I can pay off one of my credit cards and buy a new point and shoot to get me by until I can get a new one. I've been looking for something that will can take good pictures, has low noise factor in low light. I was playing with the Sony W80 and liked how it functioned and low noise levels, but i was wondering if anyone else had some sugestions and even some links to reviews and such.

BTW I'm selling my Nikon D50 with 2 lenses, one kind of dosent work entirly. It comes with 2 SD Sandisk Ultra II cards that read at 10MB a sec and write 9MB a second. One 512MB and the other 1G. It comes with all the original boxing and even the recipt, it's still under warranty. I'm also throwing in my camera bag. If your interested PM me for the price.

FUJI! Fuji has the best ISO levels in P&S and let no one tell you otherwise. And you know me, i short canon but my little P&S will be the Finepix F40. DO not, I repeat do not waste money on a Sony. Also, you can keep that SD if you go with anything other than Olympus, Sony, or older Fuji models.

Panasonic would be your next in line choice. Awesome cameras and still good ISO levels. Sadly, Nikon and Canon don't fair well in thir P&S dept. Shooting a D50, you realize when people say that get great pics with one thing and how others are something else.

If you want, the Canon S3 is the best bang for the buck out there, but it's large. It's a mini slr like the Fuji S series and Sony H series. Very nice and can be found under $300. YOu know to find me if you need help.

If you go with the S3, I know where you might get one decent used.

Peace, Nate

just do a yahoo! search and compare prices. I just bought my S3 used on ebay for $295. It came in the box with all materials, 512SD card, card reader, a polarizing filter, 2 extra lens caps, and the mini-printer. I did a lot of research before buying the S3, and I'm happy with my decision. thanks again to Damien for the recommendation!!! Great Camera with lots of features!!! I will agree with Damien that the camera is large. It's a bit bigger and noticeably heavier than my previous KODAK camera, but that's fine with me.

here's a small review and a list of a few sellers

^You might want to link thats store because Ebay is very risky. bhphoto.com and adorama.com are both reliable stores and either have the S3 new or used for a nice price. Another place to buy used from people is www.photography-on-the.net/forums and scroll down to the market forums and sell area. YOU can post that you want to buy an S3 or just look. They are there.

B&H right now has the Canon S3 for $294 jsut the camera. Check around for SD cards. They just had an awesome sell. I got 2GB Ultra II for $40. The site I listed is great for Canon users and even just camera users in general because we all watch for sales and post about them so if you're in need of cheap SD or CF cards, we know about it.

Actually i had a S3 and then upgraded to a D50 because it considered everything a low light picture and required a flash. When I turned off the flash I got blurry pictures. It drove me crazy! I played with a W80 and really liked how it took pictures and the fact that it had a ton of ISO to choose from. It wouldn't stick with the standard 200, 400, 800, and 1600. It would pick a ton of ISO inbetween depending on the lighting.

I agree with what you have to say about fuji. They take amazing pictures and do well in low light, but I dont want to switch to XD memory and the newer Fuji cameras dont do as well as some of the older ones on noise levels.

Hey Damien, Give me some Fuji Model numbers that you think are good and use SD and I'll take a look at them. I'm also trying to stay in a budget of 250 for the camera. Remember I'm trying to get out of debt!

Fuji F40 is great and runs between $250-$300. Was less than that on Dell for awhile. Um, hm..the S3 got you blurry pics? I'm about to put up an album my g/f and i shot, jut for fun, on the beach at sunset and i got some nice pics. I'll get them posted. Maybe you had a bad copy. (lol, inside joke sorry).

Hm, panasonic though is nice. You could check out the TZ-1 if you can find it. The newer models are more expensive but noise level ain't bad but it's 10x optical and pretty pocketable.

I like the f40 but dont know if I like it all that much. Do you have any good sites I can compare them at. I've got a few that I enjoy but find that some of them dont have reviews for both the f40 and the w80 so I can do a common comparison.

Photozone.de is good. i'll see what else I can find. im jut very againist sony because of memory cards (you said you dont want to use xd but you dont mind memory stick duo!?!), bang for buck, and false advertising much like pansonic does, but at least panasonic produces better camers. By that, i mean the name Carl-Zeis appearing on the lens. Sorry, it's not Carl-Zeis quality.

www.dpreview.com and www.stevesdegicams.com are both the bibles of digital camera reviews.

As has been mentioned stay away from the Sonys. All shit is all I can say about them.

Canon, Fuji and Olympus make the best compacts on the market, by quite a large margin over the others.

Look only at those 3 brands, narrow down what features you want, and find a model that fits.

But remember that you will forced into making compromises, and IQ will be a step down from the D50.
You will have to get used to large DOF again, and of course high noise levels, especialy at higher ISO levels.
Focus time will also suffer of course, and most importantly you will be stuck with a fixed lens again.

So deciede what are the most used, and important to you, features of the your noink, and look for a compact from Fuji, Canon or Olympus that comes as close as possible.

Well I've decided that I'm going to get the F40. It's looking good and the only thing that I was missing from it was the image stablization and the site I was looking at didn't say if it had it or not. I love the things that Fuji has been doing and with the fact that they use SD memory I sold.

Half the reason I was looking at the sony was becuause if I had to switch to XD or Sony memory I was going to go sony.

Thanks a lot guys for your help. I'll be sure to post some pictures for you guys.

Heck, why switch? SD has the best prices and Sony and XD rips you off, espcially since Olympus is the only XD only camera now.

Um, good choice and yes, it has stabilization but not like others. It's still very effective, but not in the lens but in the body. Yes, despite the fact of it being a P&S that makes a diff. But FL is so short and the useful ISO will mostly help.

Well It's good Bye to my D50. I just sold it for 535. I feel that it's worth more then that but ever since the D40 came out the value in my camera has dropped like a rock. Oh well. All the extra money I got will definelty help right now and maby next year I can blow closer to 1200 on a new digital SLR. Now I'm hunting for the best price on the f40. I've found it for 200 on new egg and Amazon. I think thats the best price I'm going to find anywere.

I had an S3 in the past. It does great in well lit conditions such as going to the Zoo, motorsports, etc.

If you want a compact pocket camera, I'd recommend the Canon SD line of powershots. They rock. I've got an old SD110 with over 30k images on it and a newer SD700 with about 10k pics on the odo.

I wanted a photo/video hybrid mini-dslr, so I bought the new'ish Canon S5 IS with a 430EX external flash. The videos from this thing are excellent. With the flash attached it almost feels like a DSLR but with less weight, much lower cost, and stereo sound movies.

I used to have a D100 with the SB800 flash. I don't miss that big heavy thing, except for the crisper images and faster operation.
