WIP: Ferrari 360 Spider

It seems I've caught Ferrari fever. :screwy:

Revell's Ferrari 360 Spider painted. Chrome was stipped from the wheels and painted a mixture of X10 and X11. Body is Krylon Fusion Sunbeam/Safety Yellow over a duplicolor chrome yellow base. No clear coat. After drying for around 24hours, body was wetsanded with 2000 grit, polished with turtle wax polishing compound and finally waxed with turtle wax. Paint, compound and wax are all Wal-Mart specials. This was really an experiment to see if I can get a decent shine without needing to clear coat. I think it came out OK.

Interior is stock before I had flocking. Pretty basic.

I didn't like how it looked with body colored headlight clusters, so I painted those X18. Grill below the lights was thinned down and painted XF1. Couple of mocked up shots:

I would agree! Before this, I'd always clear; but now, unless it's metallic, I think polishing the paint is sufficient. I hope this also shows that there are other paints out there that can give good results. I read so many old threads that said you can't get a good finish with any paint other than Tamiya. :grinno: For whatever reason, I've had great success with Krylon fusion for plastic.

Update: rear bumper.

I though the solid yellow was boring, so I painted the middle section X18 then decaled with Aioshima CF (it came with a wing kit I bought). This stuff is T-H-I-I-I-I-N! The solvaset eats it up if it isn't touching plastic. It was also pretty bright, so I toned it down with X19 smoke. I think it's pretty convincing. This car is based on a real 360 spider that I saw in the parking lot the other day. I think this part was mesh on the 1:1. Not on mine...:evillol:

Any tips for fixing the jagged edge below the CF? I think the decal and paint were pretty brittle when I pulled the masking off and it cracked. I was thinking a wash, but I honestly haven't figured washes out. I have to do the panel lines on this one and I'm pretty sure it will screw the paint up. Any tips?

Should the engine cover be the traditional red, or would yellow be more appropriate? I'd try my hand at CF, but the Revell engine top is one piece and will be a bitch to get at.

Superb finishing also on this beauty. TBH I don't like so much tan buckets with yellow body, but I'm a traditionalist ;)

I think it's hot! Great shine on this one! I like the black headlight clusters, it gives a more aggressive look! Also the rims!

As for the interior, I think some darker color would match better to yellow, like dark grey or black, or even a 2 tone interior...

And as for the engine cover, I think you can try yellow!

Looks fantastic - the wheel colour looks great against the yellow body.

Thanks for the comments guys. I agree that the brown doesn't look so hot with the yellow. This car started out as red and finished like most of my paint jobs do. In a DOT3 bath. :grinyes: I didn't really think about the interior until I test fit it. When I tried taking the seats out, I heard that "plastic cracking" sound and thought, I can live with it! :uhoh:

I don't think i've seen the revell spyder look better.
I would paint a flat black stripe on the rear bumper to hide the transition from cf to the yellow. You might be able to do it with a ultra fine tip marker though i've had some that reacted badly with some types of paint.

Great job with a rubbish kit. You've got wicked camber, but that's the kit's fault, not your own.

Is CS the Challenge stripes on the Stradlade? Don't have any of those...

Actually, this kit has gone together pretty nicely and the body looks like it will sit nicely on the chassis. The body spread out a little bit, but I should be able to pull it back together. The wheels do wobble on the axle. If they're placed carefully, they look OK. I forgot to straighten it out on a few of the pictures.

The Stradale had those as one of their many paint options. Seems that a lot of of the CS's didn't have them. Still though, as promoted by Ferrari, they did.

I'm going to try my hand at a flat black wash. This part is as good as done now that it's glued in.
