Turn signal problem

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I can't seem to find the answer.
The turn signals on my '98 GS stopped working. The emergency flasher works OK. No fuses blown.
I looked for a flasher module and don't see one anywhere.
I understand that there is a "combination" turn signal/emergency flasher. Does that mean that the problem is probably with the switch on the column?
If someone can point me to the links for troubleshooting and repair it will be most appreciated.

The hazard flasher/turn signal relay is a combo unit. Check the turn signal/cornering lamps fuse first to include 12 volts and that none of the turn signal lamp sockets are shorted out. But most likely the multifunction switch (MFS) at the steering column. Let me know if you plan on DIY and need a tech procedure.

Thanks bnaylor for your usual prompt reply.
The turnsignals are working again this morning. Maybe poking & prodding while looking did something. The fuse was not blown but I didn't check the voltage.
Recently while changing a bulb, the old one showed evidence of overheating at the bulb base and deposit on the terminals.
In the event that an intermittent failure is a precursor of total failure, a couple of questions:
How hard is it to replace the multifunction control switch? I assume removal of airbag and steering wheel is required.
Are the cheaper aftermarket parts likely to work OK and last? The prices seem to be about $120 on ebay, $240 for name-brand OEM quality from parts houses, or $360 at the dealer.

You're welcome. See link below for detailed replacement procedure with pics. Fairly easy DIY 1 hour job and no you do not need to mess with the SRS airbag system or pull the steering wheel. However, do pull the airbag fuse and let caps drain off for about 1/2 hour first.
Aftermarket MFS work fine and a good buy due to the cost. Last one I replaced was a pull from a low mileage Regal from a salvage yard. $60.00.

Wanted to report the happy ending. I bought the $120 new part on ebay since the junk yard wanted $75 for one that might not have much life left. The replacement went great, thanks to the instructions bnaylor linked me to. Thanks also to Jason Williams of the ClubCP forum. You guys are great for sharing and helping us who are knowledge challenged.

I am up over the 600,000 mile mark sitting behind the wheel of 96 and 98 regal's.
On my 96 the turn-signal switches were $80.
With my 98 I had prices of $600. $400.
used $250. $80.(2001)car
These were over a period of 2 months.
The first thing I did was run a wire from the front signal to the back on both sides.
This made the signals work but it caused the front yellow lights to come on when I used the brakes.
Then the brake light lights stoped working.
I rewired up some other things but it was only a stop gap until I found the $80 part.
Now I know I am not the only one who fixes buicks.
