In my time on Automotive Forums I have often come across the definition Kiwi.. It seems that P-Man is a "kiwi" and others are as well.. My question is: What does "kiwi" mean? Do you say Kiwi when someone comes from New Zealand?
Greetings

Yeah 'kiwi' pretty much means someone from New Zealand.

It's much like calling someone from the US a yank or yankee. Or an englishman being called a 'pom'

It's become the general slang for New Zealander

Well, um, I am very aware that Kiwis are never to be compared to Aussies and I have come to accept that.
But maybe you could explain it to all the new people here. Not me, cause I already know, just the new guys. yeah....

Kiwis - a kiwi is a small native flightless bird which is a national symbol of New Zealand. Hence, New Zealanders refer to themselves as kiwis.

Australians and New Zealanders have a fierce sporting rivalry being close neighbours (in the same way Queensland and NSW have a sporting rivalty, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the Mets and Yankees for that matter).

New Zealanders are a lot like Canadians - we tend to get overshadowed by our more well-known neighbor. We have our own culture and we are proud of our acheivements. Often our neighbors claim some of our folk as their own - mainly because a lot of kiwis are in Australia and a lot of Australian are in NZ (in fact until about 15 years ago you could fly between each country without a passport if you were a NZ or AU citizen) eg Russell Crowe, Neil Finn, Jay Taurima, Lisa Chappell, Rebecca Gibney were all born in NZ. In the same way many of us don't realise that Neve Campbell and William Shatner are Canadian Born.

Having said that - away from both NZ and AU - kiwis and diggers have fought wars as ANZACs, and we have an affinity and friendship with each other esp when I travelled around the world you could always count an Australian, South African and Canadian as being folk you have a beer with and become friends...

Incidentally, POM is a Australasia term for an Englishman - it comes from POME ie prisoner of mother england which is where the sons of the sheep stealers, the convict kids across the ditch are descended...

:finger:

kidding but you get the picture - we bag them as descendants of criminals and the scum that settled and they bag us as the sheep shaggers... it's only natural...

"A rose would be a rose by any other name..."

Or in my case, an old man with a prediliction for rambling notes...

if being Wilson would to infer that you think me wise then thank you for the flattery if it means that you think me to be an old man espousing irrelevant trivia then I'll go hide...

And no I won't be Wilson as a screenname it would be too confusing to have more than one screenname on different forums...

Though none of you have seen my face... maybe I am Wilson after all...

That's what is known here as a kiwifruit. We have to call them a kiwifruit to distinguish them from the native bird - obviously in the US, you don't need to differentiate the two so hence you refer to them as kiwis.

Kiwifruit are a hybridised version of a fruit originally from Asia - which was previously called a chinese gooseberry. Harvey Turner from Turners and Growers - who were the folk who trailblazed the markets for the little fuzzy brown fruit - dubbed the 'kiwifruit' as at the time. China was an enemy of the US (Korean War Era) and the name chinese gooseberry was considered not a good marketing name.

New Zealand kiwifruit are now branded as Zespri. Predominantly, the variety grown here is Hayward but the new Yellow Zespri is beginning to become popular too. The Hayward variety is very similar to the variety called Chico in California.

Kiwifruit plants are unusual in having male and female plants - to produce fruit on the female plants you need to have a male in proximity. The other thing is that bees don't find kiwifruit pollen particularly attractive either so you need to spray a sugar solution on the odd branch to get them to pollinate (a small part different branch each day to fool the bees)...
