driver axle install help please.

can someone explain to me step by step how to reinstall the driver axel.
for my 89 crx si?
i did it the othe day and it fell out. it just spins and spins and the driver wheel wont move forward at all. i dont know why.
i spent all day trying to get it to click in right. maybe i need a new axel.
i know i need a new stud cause the shit was stripped.

Is it all the way in the transmission? If your having problems there, remove it and put some axle grease on it, should help it slide right in. And by "stud" do you mean the end of the axle is stripped? if so you need to just go get a new one, no way to replace that.

what "stud" are you talking about? maybe you have the wrong size axle. there should be splines on each end of the axle which will fit perfectly into the hub and the transmission. if it wont slide in, you have the wrong size axle

i think it's the stud on the ball joint?. with the castle nut on it.

could it be the teeth if one is broken? i think that may be why it just spins.

was the axle used? you need to explain what kind of replacement you put in there. I once put an inner joint from the passenger side on the drivers side axle and the input shaft wasn't long enough to seat in the tranny..it kept popping out at the worst times. Like tony said check the circlip. I've stripped the ball joint threads before to, you could get a tap and dye set if the stud is screwed and try to straighten the threads, or force a new nut on there. I used it as an excuse to put a new joint on there

i forced one on it came off though. i just bought a new lower ball joint for it.
i think i will get a new axel and hopefully that will fix the problem.

if your doing the balljoint yourself and run into problems let me know..there is an easy way to do it at home and a very hard, agonizing way that will end up with you smashing the shit out of it and going crazy

how do i install it without a press?. i dont want to pay 40 bucks to have it pressed at a shop.

You have to remove the spindle from the car. Then there are all kinds of creative things you can do. You can go to an auto parts place and rent a ball joint removal tool. I basically looks like a heavy duty c-clamp and has adapters you can use to remove and install different ball joints. Personally I changed mine with a 5 pound sledge....get an old fair sized deep socket like a 17mm for example, it has to have enough of a diameter to slide over the ball joint threads, but a smaller diameter than the ball joint itself cause your gonna use it to drive the old bj out. Take the retaining clip off the old ball joint, place the socket over the old bj threads and place the spindle on a surface that is gonna hold it in place while you smash the old bj out (I used a bench vice, but I"m sure you don't need one.) Once you get the old one out, clean the hole the bj goes into and gently tap the new one into place...lol, the new one goes in much easier than the old one comes out. Put the retaining clip on the new joint and your good to go. People will say this is the wrong way, but if you have common sense and use the right sized sledge to hammer everything it all works out
