**1992 Thunderbird Problems: Rattling sound***

There are several things wrong with this car.. and I was wondering if you all could help me.

First problem: After I drive on the freeway for a while, then get off, then get into town, when I stop at stop lights, or stop signs, or anything like that, and my car is still in gear, the oil pressure gauge will go all the way down.

Second Problem: I hear a clicking sound sound coming from the engine when I'm driving. Or.. say, if I put it in neutral and press the accelerator the clicking sound still occurs.

What could cause these problems? What are these problems? How easy/hard are they to fix? Approximately how expensive are they to fix?

Have you checked the oil level? When the engine heats up to operating temp the clearances are greater and the oil thins out. Think of a garden hose. When you put a finger partially over the end of it there is more pressure then when you remove your finger (greater clearance). The clicking sound could be a lifter that is bad or not receiving enough oil due to low pressure. First thing to do is change the oil and filter and use a high quality oil and I always use a Motorcraft filter. If this doesn't work, install a good oil pressure guage, like a Stewart Warner (factory guages aren't really accurate), and see how far the pressure actually drops down to. A shop may have a gauge that they can screw in to check the oil pressure for you. It's hard to say, without listening to the engine and knowing the actual pressure, what is wrong with it. Replacing a lifter may solve the problem or it may be time for new bearings. Have a reputable shop check it for you.
