Find a new mechanic. Pretty sure canadian 3000gts have the exact same engine as ones from the states, so that shouldn't be an issue. Even if there are some small differences in sensors, etc...a half intelligent mechanic should be capable of making the changes. Regardless, find a new one, because if he couldn't tell the engine was blown before, then either he's incompetant or trying to make as much $$ off you as possible.
Ask to find out exactly what is wrong with everything he is telling you to replace.

do you have an Auto or Manual trans? it sounds like you have an Auto because they are controlled by a computer, referred to as the TCU (transmission control unit). the Manual trans has no computer, its only controlled by the clutch pedal and the shifter ;).
so if the above is true that you have an auto trans, your mechanic doesn't know if the TCU or the entire trans is bad. ask him to tell you specifically what is wrong, because it sounds like since he doesn't know anything, he's just telling you to replace the whole thing instead of fixing the small part that causes the problem.
that's backyard/redneck mechanics for you, right there. morons who don't know how to troubleshoot and diagnose problems just tell you to replace the entire thing instead of repair the problematic part. both fix the problem, but one way is a cop-out and very expensive, and the other is the intelligent and right way to do it.
i agree with Igovert500. if your mechanic didn't know the engine went out until after he pulled the trans, then you should get a new mechanic. so lastly, please tell us all about your car (turbo or non-turbo, manual or auto trans, etc etc) and get the mechanic to tell you EXACTLY what is wrong. the more info you give us, the better we can help you.
