gas milage

I just bought a 1998 yukon and i have a friend that has the same thing , the only thing different in these yukons . i have the tow package and he dosent, he gets 17 mpg in the city and 21 on the hw and i get 14 . he has a 342 rear end gear and i have 373 . someone please tell me if this is worth i changing these gears , i only pull a camper 3 or 4 times a year . please help Ted Carter. It is absolutely NOT worth it to change gears. If you have a 4x4 that means you have to change both axles. That ratio change might give you 1 mpg and if you live a long-long time, it won't be long enough to realize a savings.

Are these 4 wheel drives?

What follows is assuming a 4x4 SUV.

If so your friend is either bs'ing about the mpg or he is computing it incorrectly. 17mpg is about tops for a 98 Yukon. Yours is about what you can expect around town. You are pushing around 2 tons of weight.

I had a 1989, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004 and now 2008 GMC Sierra 4x4 pu and 17 mpg is tops with it. Anyone getting 21 is embelishing it IMO. The 2008 are only expected to get 20mpg under the best of circumstances, so 21 with a 98 is unbelievable unless he always drives down hill.

Your buddy is totally pulling your leg or his spedo is jacked. I had 99 tahoe 4x4 and I was averaging about 13 mpg depending upon how I drove. I've now got a 2001 Yukon XL 4x4 and I get 14.5 around town and 17 on the highway.
