Dont blame ford most of the manufacterers use or have used the same 4 cylinder engine set up with the self destructing engine when the timing belt breaks. Buy a 6 cylinder with timing chain or replace the belts when recommended. Your not the first person this has happened to. thats the reason I wont buy a 4 cyl engine in a car plus the fact you have to spend $100 to $200 dollars every so often just to keep the engine from turning into junk

i guess ford is not to blame and this is just a lession learned. i didnt even know the belt was going bad. there was no warnning. it should of been changed 50 thousand miles ago. i only had the truck 2 years and i put 2300 miles on it. 4 miles a day.

In fact many Japanese made cars like Honda, Nissan and Toyota have timing belts which need to changed every 60-80 thousand miles. Not that they won't last beyond that. In fact it may never breal at all but one is taking a chance.

ok now i have been told by other auto repair people that bent valves can not happen on that motor. i dont know who to belive now.

Did you replace timing belt your self or have a shop replace it. Everything has to be set back in time. The Crank shaft and camshaft have to be set at the correct position when you replace it. I don't the specifics on this engine but I do know you just can't put a new belt on and it will run. The timing belt is usually under a cover how did you see that it was broke.

well the truck is running now. the belt was 3 inches off. as for the repair man that told me i needed a new motor, i went back and told him off. i got half my money back.

Glad your back in bussiness, hope it keeps running for you. overall the ranger is a solid little truck. Keep it maintained and it should give you good service

When the belt breaks off the cam stops turning leaving the valves in what ever position. The piston is left to hit the valves. It can happen on any engine like that.

Not neccesaraly not all engines are inteference engines. Some are built an a way where even if the valve is all the way down the piston will not hit it(should belt break) at TDC. They re suprisingly named non-inteference engines.

Buy a new complete head for your engine. Make sure your pistons are in good shape and no holes in the block.

have a 1998 ford ranger 3.0 and it also has a no start...turns over and starts for a second or two then dies, acts like a bad fuel pump but pressure guage says its ok.lines and regulator are also good.spray carb kleen into air horn and the car will stay running at idle untill you stop spraying, then it will die.if you keep your hand over air horn blocking out the air it also will idle.after weeks of work and ten different back yard mechanics ,it turned out to be a bad m.a.f. sensor and we found out by accident by undoing air horn and trying to start truck,it started and ran good. after we went to junk yard and got another used one and put it in.....did not know that it would run without one , or stop the engine if it had a bad one...plus no codes at all, if something goes bad that is hooked up to computer then it should give a code when that item goes bad. are there items that do not do that?? does anyone know for sure??? let me know will ya.
