no second gear

I have been fighting with this 98 jimmy for a month now. It wont shift from first gear to second at all, but if you let off the gas it shifts to third. It says that it is the 1/2 shift solenoid electrical. Well I replaced both solenoids and the wiring harness in the transmission and still no second gear. Fourth gear works great and it is clean in the pan.

Welcome to AF
Have you checked the wiring and power feeds to the solenoids.
What does the transmission scanner say about the problem?
Any codes?

The power feed to the solenoids is good. The scanner says 1/2 shift solenoid electrical. Checked the ohms in the solenoids and they are good.

What is the code no?
Have you checked wiring all of the way to VCM?
Can you ground solenoid at VCM and get it to switch?

All the wiring from the transmission up is working great. You can ground it at the vcm and it will click. The code is po753. What does the transmission do if there is a problem with the servo?

Have you inspected the separator plate? Are all the check balls in the proper positions, or have any worn through the plate and fallen into the opposite side passages?

computer has been down. I have not checked the seperator plate yet. I guess that would be the next thing I should try.

I agree with this, this is where I would be looking too. Also have you tried a bi-directional scanner and tried to manually force a gear change?

The P0753 is a shift solonoid 'A' electrical problem, so you could still have an electrical issue somewhere too. Another idea might be to trace that wire from the VCM to the shift solonoid, like MT mentioned too.

Now you do mention the power feed is good, but are you checking both sides of the circuit, and how are you checking it too?
