98 GTP clock/radio display not working properly

The display on my radio started showing crazy characters about a year ago and then it would work normally and then screw up again. It has gradually gotten worse, becoming harder to read and lasting for longer periods of time. It seems to work a little better when it's cold outside, but it isn't a huge difference. Now the display always reads random characters and doesn't ever go back. I've seen other posts with the same problem, but the only reply ever given is to replace the backlight bulb. It doesn't seem to me like that would help, as the characters are clear and bright, just not numbers. Will a new bulb actually fix the problem or is there something else I should do?

Unfortunately I think your entire display is going bad and will need to be replaced. I replaced the entire head unit in mine with an aftermarket unit. Sounds great and I don't have the display problem anymore. If you insist on the factory unit then you will probably have to replace the entire unit.

can you guys give me any model numbers of aftermarket decks that are decent, and that look ok. Ones that dont clash with the red interior lights?

Most Kenwood and Pioneer decks have switchable illumination from red to green. I have a Kenwood MP3 capable deck in mine. Other than the smallish, hard to read buttons, it's a good sounding deck. The Pioneer DEH-P47H and DEH-P77H (the 77 has 3 sets of RCA's, the 44 only 1) decks are din 1.5 size, and fit in the GM dash opening with no adapte required. They don't have MP3 disc capability though. Alpine also made a din 1.5 size radio that draws raves from critics, but it is no longer prduced and impossible to find.

I will sell you mine out of my 97. It works great. Hooks up to the steering controls. I have never had this problem out of it. LMK

Thanks but I plan on buying a new car within the next 6 months so I'm just going to live with it for now
