Hi guys I don't know if anyone has any answers here or not but I have nothing to lose. My 94 4Runner V6 has been acting up for over 4 months now.
I've replaced the mass air flow sensor, the fuel pump, the fuel regulator, the O2 sensor, the spark plugs, spark plug wires, new distributor and rotor and last but not least the fuel line filter and dam it it's still screwed up. The spark plugs didn't show any signs of sooting or fouling in any way, I compared there color to Other used spark plugs and they looked good.
I've spent over $2000 on this 4Runner that had run perfect for almost 14 years and now I cannot even drive for 5 minutes without it bucking, hesitating, with No Power at all and eventually stalling. I also replaced the ECM or ECU with a good used one. I also cleaned the air intake and throttle body and cleaned and reattached the ground to the battery, the ECM, the coil which shows as being good, the ground to the engine from the firewall were also inspected and cleaned. I even bought a new gas cap for the gas tank and also had the fuel injectors cleaned at the dealer and "They Said The Engine Runs Perfect When It Is Hooked Up To The Fuel Injector Cleaner" but when it's hooked up to the fuel system again it acts up again.
I have no idea what else to do, the Toyota Dealer cannot fix the truck, and my mechanic cannot fix it either, They Cannot Figure Out What Is Wrong and I'm running out of money trying to fix it. OneThing About It IS When It's Acting Up If I Turn Off The Engine, While In Neutral And Restart It It Works Good For A Few Minutes Then Starts Acting Up Again
I don't know what else to do, does anyone here have any suggestions?
I've been searching online for the 4 months and have tried almost everything that has been suggested here and else where online. The engine is good, there are times it works Perfect for a few hours but Eventually it will act up
Now that the summer is on us it's acting up even more because of using the air conditioning. It use to only act up when it would be warmed up or hot and only when there is a load on the engine, like driving around normally, but now it's even acting up when it's idleing after just starting it.
I don't know what else to do?
I don't even drive it much anymore because of it acting up and making me fed up with it.
I have a spinal cord injury and my 4Runner was my outlet for going any where even 4wheeling or just for a long drive to get out of the house and be alone for a while but I don't take the 4Runner out anymore because I feel like putting a match to it I get that pi**ed off. :banghead:
I followed Threads here from people that had a similar problem but almost none of them ever posted how they fixed their problem. Those that did Post a fix for it I've tried there fix and still it's acting up.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly Appreciate Them.
Thanks For Your Time In Advance.

Just to add to the first post. The more gas that is in the gas tank the more the 4Runner seems to act up? :banghead:
Any Ideas ?
Thanks.

How many miles do you have on the truck? Have you had the truck compression tested yet? Cat convertor is functioning normally?

Hi silver Thanks for Your Reply.
The compression was tested and is good on all 6 cylinders, the catalic converter was also checked out and is good and there is approximately 130000 Miles on the 4Runner, engine, transmission and drive drain have never been moditified in anyway for as long as as I've owned it and thats 8 years now. I do have an exhaust leak I noticed yesterday, but I doubt if that would be it because this leak just statrted within the last week and I'll have to have that fixed.
It just really confuses me as to how the 4Runner can work perfect for about 30-40 minutes then it starts acting up gradually with minor hesitaion and progresses to bucking, even a type of backfire but it seems to be coming from the air intake, after this you can have the gas pedal pushed to elivate your speed but the 4Runner just doesn't respond for a about 2-20 seconds then all of a sudden it kicks in and acts normal again. This is what has everyone really confused. My wife said she noticed gas fumes by the passenger side firewall, so I was thinking maybe the fuel damper? It does have a problem with initial startup and I'm not sure if it always does that now or not, I haven't paid close attention to it until the gas fumes were noticed a couple of days ago. I'll keep an eye on it now though.
Thanks again for Your Reply.

Finally my 4Runner is FIXED, THANK GOD.
The problems were, after my head gasket was fixed about 4-5 years ago, the person that fixed it damaged a sensor at the back of the engine and it took time for it to completely go. Also on the passenger side of the engine theres a sensor, that comes from a chrome tube, with Wires and Tape Around The Wires, that is electrical and has a plastic connetor and it connects to another plastic connector going, I Don't Know haha, but that was bad also. And last but Not Least He either adjusted the Idle Control or Replaced The Idle Control Sensor, The Guy Still Will Not Tell me what he Actually Did To Fix My 4Runner but " Thats How He Explained It To Me" I'm a Happy Little Camper Now :runaround: and Hopefully others that are in the same position as I was may be able to use this Information.
Thank You All For Your Suggestions.

Yup it makes a Body feel good when all is working well haha.
I was looking at the FJ's also, but I'll wait a few years to see how reliable they are .

Just an update, I bought a 2007 Toyota fj cruiser with 15,000 miles on it, have had it 3 yrs now and love it, a true 4wd you can even hose out the inside if you like, my 94 ForeRunner still works really good but I have it stored in my garage, I still love that suv the most but with all 4wd's being basically converted to everyday drivers, the FJ is a true 4wd with all the necessities, good luck.

I agree with you. When I look at all the new 4wd's out there I think to my self... Those things can't be made to off road!!!
Good news on your 4runner too. Hope you can provide me with any other details...

The sensor that is The Problem was damaged when they removed the head for new head gaskets, it's at the rear of the engine closest to the firewall, it's for a V6, that's the engine in my ForeRunner, Good Luck.

Did a car dealership mechanic find the problem or was it your personal mechanic who found/diagnosed the problem? Thanks for all your help... Also, did the gas smell go away?
