The little things

I put down some money on a car tonight to hold until purchasing it tomorrow, but I have several questions. The wife really likes the car and it is somewhat unique and difficult to find, which really makes me not want to sweat the small stuff. And at the same time I feel like I'm getting taken advantage of by the salesman...

I know I'm getting a good price on the car, and I'm happy with it. However, after agreeing to a price I find out that there is only 1 key with remote entry controller!! Don't you think a dealer selling a car would at least provide 2 keys? They are going to charge me the "manufacturer's" price of $27 to get another key made!?

Several other things are bothering me, but to keep it simple...should I put up with paying for this extra key, or are they trying to screw me. Also is it standard anymore to have a full tank of gas when leaving the lot with your new car.

Other information is that this is a 2006 used vehicle being purchased from a good sized toyota dealership.

Thanks for listening, if anything I needed to vent, but I'm ready to walk away over a stupid key.

If you and your wife like the car and it is unique, i would suggest buying it. Don't let a remote entry contoller stop you from buying it. As far as buying the other key depends on how bad you need it, can't you just make another key cheaper, without the remote entry?

As far as I know I can't duplicate the key cheaply at the harware store like the old days because of the computer chip's inside them. You're right I should just buy the car, and I don't even care about the cost of the key in the grand scheme of things. I just thought that dealerships had some sense of customer service to provide the little cheap things to keep you coming back and telling your friends.

do you know if a full tank is standard?

About the full tank of gas, I would expect it to be but I am not sure. Sounds like the dealership may lack in the cutomer service, but if you have the car at the right price then again I would buy it, just mention to the dealer about the gas situation. It never hurts.

Many dealerships across the country are foregoing the full tank of gas routine. My bet is they are trying to save money with the ever increasing price. A bad move on customer service if you ask me. On the key, I would bring it up to the salesperson that all the cars you've bought in the past have had 2 sets of keys and/ or remotes. Why s this situation any different? See what they say. Tell them you really like the car but you need 2 keys/ remotes and would like them to furnish them to you as part of the deal on you buying the car. It's not like you're asking them to do something major, and the cost to them is even less because they mark up all the prices. If they are a decent dealer they should comply with your request if they want your business bad enough.

Thanks for the replies, here is the update. The car is purchased and I kept telling the salesman how disappointed and ridiculous it was that I wasn't getting two keys. In the end I got the key, but I really am disappointed with the overall customer service of this dealership.

At one point he said if we financed through them instead of our lower interest rate credit union he would throw in the key! He said it's "only" an extra $4 per month and he'll give me the key. I laughed in his face and said he was going to give me the key anyways and I am going to finance with whomever I want to finance through. That would have been a $240 key if I bit on that. I find it unbelievable.

I'm still new to all this stuff, but I'm glad cars last long enough that you don't have to do this all the time...

Ha that's great...if it's ONLY $4 per month then it shouldn't be a problem for THEM to pay that $4 per month right LOL...
