Okay...I'm posting this for a friend of mine.
98 Ford Escort. Lost one and only key. Needs new key cut, but dealership told her that they no longer had the key code. This after producing the V.I.N. for the guy.
Any ideas?

A locksmith would have no trouble making a key for it. It would be much more economical to take one of the locks out (Door or trunk) and take it to him to get the key made.

Thanks for your response, but it seems as if the key has now been found. Yay for her. I recommended that she have extra keys cut *immediately*. :P

I've always kept a spare key in the back of my wallet. It's not a case of if I lose a key rather than a case of when I lose a key or when I lock it in the car. Everybody-----Get a spare key made and keep it in your wallet or purse.

I think in '98 or '99 the security chip was put into the keys. My 97 doesn't and I am glad of that. Who wants to steal an Escort anyway. At, very best they would not get anything, but would tear up your car. Twenty would be high dollar to get a key with a chip. 20 bucks! I don't know if I would get another key or not.
