2001 Aurora input turbine speed sensor

First off......hello all! I'm a brand new user of this forum and just from looking very briefly through here, it looks like there are a ton of smart people that may be able to prvide me with some knowledge!

I have a 2001 Aurora with an input turbine speed sensor error. (P0716 and P0717). I'm trying ot get an understanding of what it takes to change this guy. I'm also not 100% certain that this is actually my problem. I was driving the car one humid day, and when I went over some very rough train tracks, all of my gauges shut down for a few seconds, and then popped back on. Could this be a bigger issue than just the sensor? I would hate to throw a bunch of money into the car just to find out that I still have the problem. Also, the transmission seems to shift very hard and/or slip....but only when the check engine light is on. When the light is off, it seems to run very smooth. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

about 1,5k job for sensor alone.

I had the input speed sensor and some other components changed for $750. The mechanic had to lower the motor down on the drivers side to get at the transmission side access panel to replace the sensor. He also replaced the pressure control valve, a pressure sensor assembly and one of the shift solenoids. However, the transmission still shifts hard sometimes after I have driven a few miles. I think it may be a software problem.

I've got the same problem with my 95; mine started as an intermittent problem. At one point it wouldn't go above second gear; I changed the shift solonoids and took care of that issue. I know there is a post on this forum that talks about how to change it yourself but you will need to be pretty handy. One thing worth mentioning is that on the 95's at least the check engine light for this problem does not cause the emissions system to be bypassed. I just had mine pollution tested last week, had to talk the kid into doing it because of the light being on and it passed with flying colors. Good luck to you, great car when its running well. Just a pain to fix.

I had the same problem. The sensor is located in the tranny and I read in a book that the sensor is a magnet. Because of the design of the vehicle the transmission runs on the hotter side. Over time the clutch packs burn and that material sticks to the sensor. I bought a transmission additve and installed0 an auxillary transmission cooler in front of the condensor. Since then no code or hard shifts, I will keep my fingers crossed.
