99 Intirgue Service Engine Soon warning light

I had the smog done a month ago and it passed with flying colors. I'm not sure if it happened just after this (because it's my daughter's car), but the Service Engine Soon light stays on. The car also seems to have a "rougher" sound to it and idles a bit rough (but run fine when moving). Are these connected? I was going to change the plugs first, and then see how to reset the warning light? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Rick

go to Autozone or some place that reads codes for free - get the exact code (like P0XXX) etc, and report back to us with the code

Thanks ........... I'll go there in the morning and let you know. There's an Autozone about 3 miles away ................... thanks again, Rick

OK,
I went to Autozone and they plugged in the code reader (I'm not sure what it's called), but it read 2 codes: P0340 and P0410
Probably causes for each code (on the reader detail was):
Code 0340 - Cam sensor condition
1. Cam sensor defective
2. Check connector and wiring to sensor
3. Engine mechancial condition belt/chain out of time.
Code 0410 - Secondary air injection system fault.
1. Circuit relay defective or fuse open
2. Check connector and wiring
3. Air pump defective or hoses blocked
Does anyone have any ideas on which one to start with? and/or which cause to investigate?
By the way, they also reset the codes and the warning light has not appeared again. I've only driven it 5 miles since this was done.
I really appreciate any expertise and advice.
Thanks,
Rick

Is this engine a 3.5 or a 3.8?

Sorry about that. It's a 3.5L
My daughter also added some oil and forgot to put the cap back on. I noticed some oil on the garage floor, but it didn't appear to get all over the engine. She probably drove it for a week or so like this (and it only lost about 1/3 - 1/2 of a quart. I wasn't sure if this was needed information, but the warning light could have gone on around this time as well. The car doesn't burn much oil at all. Maybe a quart every 5-7k miles ............
Thanks again,
Rick

If the codes some back, I'd probably start with the cam sensor.
As far as the air pump -- Mine never set a code, but when I first bought it the pump was a little louder than I thought it should be. I found that the air pickup had come loose and the bottom of the pump was open to road dirt and stuff. I cleaned it out and reattached the pickup and it's seemed ok since then.

Well,
The warning light came back on, so I ordered the Cam sensor today and it will be in tomorrow (late afternoon). I'll try replacing this and see what happens. Will I have to reset the warning light?, and could this also be why the car sounds a bit louder and rougher the last few weeks?
Thanks,
Rick

That could definetely make it run rougher, but I dont know about making the car any louder. What sort of louder? Like engine-wise? Exhaust-wise? Strange noises?

Hi,
It idles a bit rougher (not really noticible when moving), however when you take off the car sounds louder (or rumbles). Maybe something that sounds like an exhaust leak? ........... but I'm absolutely not a car expert so I'm guessing.
Thanks,
Rick

I think the car running louder could be due to the air pump. do a search on the secondary air pump. I think someone just posted directions on how to locate it.

I've changed my camshaft position senor at 80k its located right under and beside the coolant resevoir. When I changed mine the CEL went away just after a few miles of driving and letting the engine run.
As of the other code I wouldn't know how to fix unless I get familiar with it but I would spend a little time to inspect all fuilds/fuses/electrical clips/hoses/belts and everything else.
Code 0410 - Secondary air injection system fault.
1. Circuit relay defective or fuse open
2. Check connector and wiring
3. Air pump defective or hoses blocked

Did both codes come back after you reset it? Or was it just one? Did you pull the codes again, or just assume they were the same ones?

Hi everyone,
I replaced the CAM Sensor today and it was relatively easy ..... took about 20 minutes. I restarted the car and the Service Engine Light did not come back on ... yes!.... it that strange since I had 2 codes?, but reallly only addressed the CAM Sensor? The 0410 - secondary air failure code, I never did anything for this. I'll drive the car tonight to see if the light comes back on. The car still idles louder than normal and the car seems to ruumble when you accelerate (as I described in a previous thread). Someone mentioned that it could be the air pump that is causing the noise and I could get some additional info on that...... but I couldn't find it. Should I post this problem separately?
Thanks for all the help and it's good to have the warning light resolved (fingers crossed). I'm trying to get these taken care of so my youngest daughter can dirve it (she'll be getting her licence next week with any luck)..
