Why my '81 528i and I are "gasping"??

My beloved 1981 528i is making me cry. It was "gasping" when I took my foot off the accelator cruising down a mountain at highway speed. My mechanic said "new throttle." And before he was done, it was "new ignition unit" too. I'm not seeing the connection between the throttle and the ignition....?
