Continuous vs keep alive
07-28-2007, 09:57 PM
The other day i replace the mass air flow sensor on my 94 town car. I reset the keep alive memory at the same time. Disconnected neg for 15 minutes.
when i started the car and ran it the outside temp went from accuate 83 to 24 after 10 minutes of driving. I changed the sensor and did not do any reset. Again it started accurate and the dropped after 10 minutes to 23 again. Is it necessary to reset anything after changing a sensor like that?
Didnt really understand process for continuous memory clearing if it is needed.
Of the two sensors together there in front of the car. identical. One feeds the Instrument cluster and the other goes to climate control.
Cant see both going bad or the one I bought. Im at Reset Issue? or Possible
problem further down the line. I see reference voltage on some of these diagrams. Does that reference voltage come from PCM?
It was raining when it happened and i have had a problem with moisture in engine compatment from a missing flap around steering parts.
any insight would be appreciated

Your mass air flow sensor has nothing to do with your outside temp problem.
What sensor are you talking about, instrument cluster or climate control. My guess is instrument cluster. If that is the case check and clean the wiring harness at the back of the instrument cluster. Both sensors have nothing to do with your pcm. One runs right to the instrument cluster and the other in to the climate control. Unlike ODBII models the EEC V PCM is not linked to other controllers such as climate control, ABS, air ride. This is why you might have noticed that each system has its own diagnostic connectors and/or diagnostic protocols.

Thank you for responding.
Yes one goes to cluster and controls only the outside temperature display.
The other goes to climate control and if faulty will keep climate control from working right depending on the fault.
Yes the MAF sensor is not related to either.
My question is should a reset of the computer be done after changing an
A/C Ambient Air Temp Sensor or an Outside Air Temp Sensor. If so what type and how would it be done?

My manual says yes, reset by disconnecting the battery.

Thanks again
Both are replaced and on to the next one.
