password protection Windows 98

is there a way to password protect a computer with windows 98?? I know with Windows XP you can have it prompt for password on startup. Possible with 98?

I'm pretty sure the only passwords you could set would be a boot password and a screen-saver password. There is no password protection built into Win 98 for logging on to the computer.

"boot password"...is that a password that must be entered in ordered to start the computer...or to log-on?? If so, that's what I want. How would I do that?

You would set that up in the BIOS.

Windows 98 has a windows log on password for use when connected to a network and when you're not connected. Check out this link it tells you how to enable the password for both circumstances.

Of course if you're trying to set a password to keep someone out of the computer then the best option is a boot password that can be enabled and setup from the computer bios so that the computer won't even boot to hard drive, cd or floppy if the password is not typed in.

just be sure its something you can rember or youll have to clear the bios settings and start over which is not something for a novice

well, you wouldnt have to really remember it. you can always just disconnect the jumpers for a bit, and the password will be erased.

There is no real security to speak of in Windows 98.

If your hardware supports it, you should seriously consider upgrading to Windows 2000 SP4.
