Well I bought a 1996 toyota camry a few months ago and I just put all the money I need to into it performance wise. Now I want to get rid of the horrible stock system and I want to get a good but reasonably priced system to start out with like speakers, sub, headunit and amp what would be a good system for that car what brand of equipment should I get?

Buy the head unit first. That's important. For brand you'll probably want Pioneer or Panasonic. Both are great bang for buck.

Speakers, well, you got many many options, both namebrand and brands you haven't heard of as well as full range or components. I suggest you head to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and let your ears determine what you want.

Sub, I highly recommend an Alpine Type-R. You'll probably want a 10" since you got a small/midsize sedan. I just got one of these and I just can't get over how great the sound quality is at all volumes.

Amps, you got some options. I've had my Pioneer amp for over 5 years and is still running strong. Hifonics is another good pic that some regulars here use.

There is a post in the "newbie/info thread" sticky at the top with a list of what brands to consider and what not to consider. Makes a great starting point IMO.

for your subs i would go with
www.ficaraudio.com (http://www.ficaraudio.com) those subs are competition grade so you can't go wrong
and the pricing is extremely reasonable or
www.dcsoundlab.com (http://www.dcsoundlab.com)
both very good sub choices!!!

all the boxes (best buy, circuit city, etc ...) only carry the lower lines. No one buys upper level stuff at these stores

Get the best Alpine or Pioneer head unit you can afford. Then get a good set of component speakers from one of the brands listed in the FAQ "good brands" list. Find an amp for them from a decent name. Dont go cheap on it or you will end up redoing it sooner.
