My syncros hate me.

I was headed to work yesterday and at the light before the freeway entrance an Infinity FX45 pulls up in the right lane. I knew he needed in my lane and was going to gun it. When the light turned I let her rip. However, when I tried to get into second it wouldn't go. It would just sit there and grind until the RPMs dropped enough.
So I made two mistakes. I didn't launch the car and I have crappy syncros. Needless to say I'm bummed that the Stealth has a death on it now. :shakehead

Only one problem, I don't know where to get a full set of syncros. Otherwise I would have done it by now. I've known the syncros had issues since I bought the car. I can only seem to find 1st and 2nd gear syncros from Kormex. Someone on 3SI was going to do a GB for some hardened syncros but that seems to not be going anywhere. :frown:

alright, lets get some things straight. there is NOT a synchro for every gear. a synchro allows for a smooth transition BETWEEN gears, but there is not a synchro between every gear. there are synchros for the 1/2 gear change, 3/4 gear change, and if you have a 5 spd, there is a 5/R synchro. or if you have a 6 spd, there is a 5/6 synchro, but no synchro for R in the 6spd.
so the synchros you need to find are:
-1/2 synchro
-3/4 synchro
usually the synchros for the higher gears last longer than the lower gears.

So, you mean to tell me there is no syncro for the 2-3 gear change?

Like I said before, problems are like modifications on a 3/s, almost everyone has a few.

Well, it shifts smooth as butter if I drive normal so I may be lucky and it might not be a syncro. I'm hoping a mix of Royal Purple Syncromax and 75w85 will fix the problem. However, when I shift from 2nd to 3rd, even when driving normal, sometimes it grinds.

so you need the 3/4 syncro.. and lineback there is a syncro for every gear there is a syncro on each shift fork.. 1/2 use one sift fork 3/4 use one shift fork and 5/6 use a different shift fork..
so when you shift into third you are changing shift forks and useing the syncro that is between 3/4 gear

Ahh, I see.
I'll admit, I don't know a great deal about manual transmissions. Nice to learn something new. So, the problem being that Kormex only has the 1/2 and they don't have the 3/4. :frown:

its the blocking rings you need anyway
i got 1,2,3,5 gear blocking rings installed and grind gone...and never came back.
so maybe you need to call them and see if they have blocking rings

i just called em, and they have em for all gears.....its the blocking rings that go bad that causes the slip/grind you hear
there $80 a piece

Hate to say it but I'm starting to have problems with my 1st to 2nd shift at high rpms...which certainly hasn't helped in some recent races. Namely a Porsche 911 that I was having some fun with on I-95 :banghead:

Most people seem to have problems with the blocking rings like mentioned above. Just a thought - I bought a blocking ring from Kormex (1/2 grinding), spent almost $500 to have it torn apart and replaced, and it did absolutely nothing. You may want to have it diagnosed just in case...

I'm going to try changing the fluid as a first step to see if that solves the problem. If not I'll go from there.

if not.. i would say pull the tranny and bring in to me at the dealership.. grant has done a few and is good with the 5 speed tranny

This information is totally and completly wrong.
Each gear has its own syncro setup.
1st and 2nd have 3 ring sets(inner, blocking, outer). 3, 4, 5, 6 have a single ring. Reverse has no syncros.

learn something new everyday.
thanks for sharing, Alan. i try to learn as much as i can from pictures. i guess the service manual pics don't get into much detail.
i'd be curious to know if the the FWD trannies have a single ring for 1 & 2, or if they also each have a set of three rings. i recall reading on TRE (www.teamrip.com) that the FWD trans has a double 1st gear synchro? i guess this would mean a set of two rings? dunno.
well thanks for sharing and correcting me. i do appreciate it, seriously.

they still share some parts.. between 1/2 and 3/4 just the hub though.. and If i am not mistaken on the 5 speed there is a syncro for reverse.. its the 6 speed that doesn't.. please feel free to correct me
also.. ALAN you need to come by more often.. I mean we all come visit you over there.. yet you hardly come and see us.. haha

the 1st and 2nd gear ring sets are identical(and available from northbendtech.com [email protected]) you just need one set per gear.
I think 3-4 might be the same too I Can't recall. 1-2 have the most wear issues 3-> seem to do alot better. kormex and jackstransmissions (jackstransmissions.com)seem to have the rings for 3 and up.
