I'm not as familiar with transmissions as with engines. Is it a manual or automatic? I can't remember what sensors would be connected to the transmission, other than a tachometer perhaps, which wouldn't cause the car to stop running. What exactly does it do - does it not start at all, does it not shift gears?
There are a good number of parts places around that might have it. Try (or tell the mechanic to try) Rockauto.com - they tend to have a lot of the sensors and other small parts, and they sort their catalog by type of part - transmission, engine, body parts, etc. - so you might be able to look under "transmission" and find the sensor the mechanic says you need.
