Alright, I was basically given an 89 camaro rs with a v6 2.8 in it. But the engine is prety beat up. I'm goin to put a new engine in it, but instead of putting a new 2.8 in it Iwas wondering if I could go with a bigger v6. So my question is can I put a 3.1,3.4, or a 3.8 in it without any other major modifications(preferrably the 3.8)? From what I've heard from everybody on here a v6 to v8 swap will take more time and effort than I have right now....so I was wondering if just a bigger v6 would be less complicated?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

yeah, the 3.1 should bolt right up with no problems.. its basically a bored 2.8.. im not too sure about the 3.4 and 3.8 tho

After the 3.4 you go from a 60* orientation to 90* so everything changes for the 3.8 & 4.3 :2cents:

So the 3.1 and the 3.4 would both fit in without making any changes? Is there even much of a difference between the the three?

the 3.4TPI is more powerful than the old 80's V8..
1994
3.4LV6: 160hp..
1982
LU5
Ohv 5.0L V8
165 hp
but of course, the v8 has more torque, etc..but the 3.4 is decent. the 3.8 has ~200hp..so thatd be a lot better but since it doesnt fit..oh wells

You're best bet is to go with a 3.4 engine.. The 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 are all basically the same engine in a sense. It started with the 2.8, that then was stroked to a 3.1, which was then bored out to a 3.4. All you would need from the 3.4 is the block, crank, and pistons. Then take everything off of your 2.8, and swap it onto the 3.4. It's kind of cool, because no one would ever guess that you have a 3.4 with your 2.8 intake still on it. Reason why you cant use the 3.4's intake is because it does not support the sensors and such that the 2.8 uses.. the computer systems are completely different between the 2.

I'd try to stay away from the 3.1... my 2.8 has 170,600mi on it, runs great, and doesn't burn a drop of oil...but every 3.1 I've seen burns at least some...:2cents:

my 2.8 is pretty bulletproof too..
ran her without any water to cooler her for a lil bit.. still runs! (doesnt burn oil eithier)

how much might a local mechanic charge to perform this swap?
