HELP Jetta won't start

My daughters boyfriend has a 2001 Jetta with the turbo. He was coming home and when he pulled up to the stop light it died. He couldn't start it so we towed it home. We asked around and everyone said that it sounded like a timing belt. We took the timing belt cover off and it seems to be OK and tight. What else should we look for?
