Here's my situation: I have a 98 Civic DX coupe, automatic trans, want to put on a new muffler...budget $200, want a gooooood sound (low, not annoying, not that "cheap ricey sound" if at all possible). in other words, looking for quality sound over minor performance enhancement. if i can't get it for $200 or under, i'd like any and all suggestions--regardless.

first:
-am i wasting my time wanting to get a good sound out of an automatic?

(why only a muffler? dad=strict ... "no exhaust system 'cause it'll void your warranty and lower the value of your car.")

so:

-if i put a muffler on, will it void the warranty as well?
-is my dad correct in assuming that swapping out the entire system will result in voiding the warranty?
-what specific mufflers are recommended?

i live in orange county, ca and am a newbie of course...if you know of any good shops/garages, lemme know.

i've looked at a local muffler shop...they mainly do trucks, etc. all they have is Magnaflow. ($100 muffler + $100 labor) whatcha think?

finally:
if you're laughing at me right now, don't respond. i greatly appreciate any help i can get from this board. my first honda...you were there once, right?

Ok, I'm just gonna comment on one thing here. $100 labor for putting on a muffler is a HELL of a lot.

I mean here it's $50 Canadian per hour at the dealerships. So that would mean two hours worth of work, you could put an entire exhaust from the header back on in that much time. It shouldn't take more than a half hour tops to put on just a muffler.

That depends if they are just dropin the muffler on or reduin the pipe from the cat back. That is exactly what i did and about what i paid. Sounds nice, redid the pipe from cat back in 2 1/4 it takes time to bend the pipe to fit. Lots welding and for a cat back system 200 bones is cheep. Go for it

does this void the warranty, Sol?

Seeing that an exhaust is after all sensors, I don't see that it would void the warranty. The manufacturer of the product may be able to clear this up for you. I do know DC Sports has a contract with Honda, saying that their products do not void warranty, and Honda has to back it. The best way to find out is ask Honda. I remeber seeing a Federal law that prohibits the Car Manufacturer from voiding warranties for certain bolt-on products, but I'm unable to confirm that at this time. If I come across it again, I will post. I figure I have given you a few pieces to run with and do your own investigation. Hope it helps.

P.S. Dad lighten up!!

the law your talking about is the magnussen moss warranty act, you can get it here but last i tried the page was down. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/warranty/toc.htm
honda told me it would only void the warrenty if the aftermarket part caused the damage. then they told me they could install it and it would be under warrenty. so if you install an exaust and your headers broke they wouldnt cover it... i dont know how that would happen, but thats what they told me. if you want to know the truth you'll have to read that act. id tell ya what it says but ive been too lazy to read it and i dont care about my warrenty anyways.

i bought a muffler for $50 off ebay, then took it to a place called M&M Muffler down here in sacramento, california and they charged $65 for labor and $55 for big piping from the cat and back. spending that $170 i now have a faster car, and my car is also the 2nd loudest, deepest, sounding car at my whole school. only car that is louder has greddy exhaust, dc headers, aem intake, and took OFF his cat. my car is the 2nd loudest at this high school of 1400 students and it is bone stock except cheap intake off ebay and cheap muffler off ebay

Funny wouldn't think a muffler would add any power.

Man that redneck dude is a fag, I don't have nething against rednecks but that guy is gay. He probably don't know anything about cars, and he's just trying to look cool in front of his girlfriend. I bet his girl will not be impressed now when he pulls up next to a turbo civic, and gets his A@# handed to him.

You sure about that. I got a little honda that would love to prove you wrong. If you're in the MD/DC/VA area, MIR opens up on march 2nd. I'll be there, bring your car, and i'll bring my little 4 cylinder.

I have a question for u guys. A friend of mine has an 89 civic hatchback with a turbo I don't know the specifics on it, just that it has a header, turbo and aftermarket exhaust. The guy keeps egging me on and trying to get me to race him, i'd like to know what i'm up against any help would be appreciated, I drive a mustang not dynoed but my motor is supposed to have 300hp , I bought a crate motor from Ford. I don't like to race my friends but he is really bugging me about it.

Wait?!? You're from Utah? Now we have seven Utahns on the board.

To tell you the truth, it all depends on how much boost he is running. I'll bet that he can't beat you if you are running 300 at the crank, it isn't too likely that he is putting close to those same numbers unless he has put a fair amount of money and time into the car.

Have you seen this car or is it just stuff he's told you. I find it hard to believe he has a header and a turbo on the same car. Maybe just a mistake on your part. Honestly, there isn't enough detail about his setup to give a good answer. If his car has a bseries motor that is built you could have some problems on hand. It's a light chassis to begine with and he'd only need a little over 200hp at the wheels to run against you competitively due to your weight. If it's a stock motor with a bolt on turbo kit, go for it. To make sure, give some more details on his motor and i'll give you a definite answer.

I am probably mistaken , however my car is fairly light as well I have taken out the back seats, and they were really heavy also no spare tire, and my trans isn't stock it's a much lighter one than the stock ones I be the car weighs 2500 without me and I am guessing just guessing 280rwhp

decent numbers, should be a quick car. Give me a little more about his car though. If it's built, is it running a gsr, typer, si motor. Does it have anything besides the turbo. Is it built(rods, pistons, sleeved, bored). Once you give me that, i can tell who to place your bet on.

If he has a civic, and he chalenges a mustang, then he's confident and he might even win, either way, I don't really care

j/k :D

I say go for it either way. Especially since he's your friend. No money or anything on it(unless you really want to) just race for the fun and to see who has the upper hand. It will be a good test for the both of you, to see where you are in comparison to other tuned cars:)
