E39 M5 vs. C5 Corvette

I recently bought a 2001 M5 to replace my aging Maxima. I haven't had any real runs in it until now. I've been wanting to see how well the M5 would do against some else that was fast.

My chance came yesterday. I was headed out of town doing a leisurely 40 mph in a 50 zone, just sitting back enjoying the afternoon. I didn't notice that I had company until my eye caught him out of the passenger's window.
He was a young guy but didn't make any signs that he wanted to go.

I popped it into 2nd gear to let the engine scream a little bit to get his attention. That apparently did it, before I knew what was happening he had surged out in front of me. I nailed it right afterwords. Initially he had about a car length on me and we held fairly even until about 70 when I started to gain it back. By the time we hit 100, I had pulled up to his side and was starting to walk away at a faster pace. He shut down quickly afterwords at about 115. I slowed it back down and tried to get him to stop and chat, but he seemed intent on just driving on. At any rate, it was a fun (but short) run.

My car is completely stock and his was a 2000ish coup.

was it a z06 ot the base model? base vs an '01 m5 would be a damn close race,, but both impressive cars. yeah i'd rather drive an M5 than a maxima any day of the week lol

it seemed like a tie at one point but the way i see it is if the race ends with somebody ahead of the other then there's a winner and a loser this is an example of that.... he did not say any thing about a rematch so he came out 1-0 and thats a kill in anybody's book...

he didnt say he pulled a car on him he said he came up on the side of him and felt he was walking away at a faster pace

you can call it a win

Here are a few pictures of the M5 that I took this morning.

The C5 was a base model; I'm pretty sure a Z06 would have had its way with me.

So...anyone want to buy a 96 Maxima with 160k miles on it? :p

God... what do I have to do to be unique on these forums any more... It seems like everyone is getting bimmers. When I came on it was all mustangs, 'maros, and civics, now everyone is driving an ultimate driving machine. Can't blame you though. :)

Very nice M5, every single generation of that car was great. Good job beating the Vette.

If it makes ya feel better I might not be getting one for my next car, which should be fairly soon here...

Oh, and your Kimi quote is amazing. I'm serious. I have a female friend who thought he was hot, and she said she would love to go to Starbucks and just chat with him for a while, because, in her mind, anyone who she thinks is good looking is also on her mental level (she considers herself very smart). I told her that quote, and she was like...never mind.

Oh, and OP...any plans to mod? To bad your not in the North Texas area, or I could get you a decent hook up.

To be honest, it was a coin flip between getting an M3 and an M5. Both are great cars and really you can稚 go wrong with either.

I知 not sure how far I知 going to go with mods; aftermarket parts for these things are so expensive. I値l probably start to look seriously at mods after I get a few days off from work to install a new clutch in the maxima.

I値l probably start to look seriously at mods after I get a few days off from work...This advice goes against everything I hold dear and I would never be able to follow it if the shoe were on the other foot, but if you purchased that M5 with any sort of extended warranty then I would highly advise you to keep it stock. I've been told by a few friends that a bimmer out of warranty hurts worse than the clap. :shakehead

This is why you go with Dinan. The parts are really expensive, but they take over the BMW warranty on anything related to their parts. The Dinan exhaust on the E39 M5 is exquisite. Don't know if I would bother with chip, intake, or suspension. The car is great as is, and its not like you are ever going to be doing much serious racing in it (if you are, you bought the wrong car).

Hahaha, have her watch a post race interview with him. He's got the personality of a rock. And not even a shiney one.
