Here's a quick question to all you real car buffs out there. I own a 1998 Escort which comes standard with a SOHC 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. With the transmission I have it acts like a 3.0L V-6 (I know because I used to drive a 1990 Taurus). This still isn't quite enough power for me. The new 2001 Escapes come with a DOHC 3.0L V-6 that Ford tilted 45 degres forward. So here's the question...Would I be able to fit a tilted 3.0L V-6 engine into my escort and keep the current trannie that I have with it? Or will the engine take up too much room?

I haven't heard of any V6 transplants into a 3rd gen ('97-2000) Escorts, but it has been done in a 2nd gen ('91-'96), and would most likely work with your car as well. Unfortunately, you would most likely has to change the transmission as well.

This fellow in Ontario put a Japan-spec 210hp 2.5L V6 from a Mazda MX-3 (closely related car, under the skin) in his '91 Tracer. He used the Mazda motor mounts and transmission as well. Check out the pics: http://www.redpepperracing.com/cgi-bin/ids/index.cgi?mode=album&album=./TracerV6

You can contact this guy here: http://www.redpepperracing.com/cgi-bin/rpr/contact.html (it's Darren)

I have a friend in the aftermarket industry who is very knowledgable about Escorts and what can be done to them, I will talk to him today about possible transplants.

Good luck :)

I talked with my friend, and we worked out several options. All except the first will require a transmission change. Is your car an automatic or a manual? If you could provide the power range you want, and the price range you want, we can figure something out :)

Well, I'm looking for the maximum power output for the engine size. The 210 2.5L V-6 sounds pretty good. Price is just gonna be played by ear as to what options I can come up with and where I can get the best deal.

Well, the first option you have is to turbo your current SPI. That will keep the same engine and tranny. Second would be to drop in a 2.0 Zetec. The Zetec comes with 130 hp stock, with a turbo it will start at about 175. Tranny and computer will also have to be changed, price would be around maybe $2500 US. If you take the Zetec option, make sure you go with a Zetec from a Focus or Contour and not a ZX2, as they are different. A 2.5 liter Duratec in the 160 hp range will cost about $2500 US just for the engine alone, and you will need to replace the computer, steering system, instrumentation, transmission, harnesses, front suspension, and the front end will need to be re-enforced. An SVT version of the Duratec would be the same, only about $2800 US for the engine, delivering 197 hp. Finally, the most expensive, but most significant option would be a 3.0L Ford engine with 2.5 SVT heads. This will smack you into the 270+ hp range, but it will cost you.

If you want, you can talk to my friend about this yourself: ian@ppc-racing.com. His name is Ian, tell him Mark Brown from Barrie refered you regarding power for your '98 Escort.

here are a couple of options witch would be better
The KL-ZE motor is the J-spec version of the KL-03 2.5L V6, found in the 93-97 Probe GT. This swap requires a wide variety of parts not found on any stock Escort, LX or GT. So this swap would be good for all trim levels of Escort, but does require quite a bit of research and preparation prior starting. This motor boasts 200HP at the crank, and is Naturally Aspirated.

The GTX and GT-R motors are both J-spec Turbo versions of the Mazda 1.8L BP found in the 91-96 Escort GT/LX-E, and Tracer LTS. The GTX is rated at 180HP at the crank, while the GT-R boasts a healthy 210HP. Of the two, the GTX is the more widely swapped motor, due to the fact that there were only about 500 GT-R motors built, and most of them are no longer in exhistance. This swap is tailored more towards the Escorts with the 1.8L platform, due to the fact that the EGT tranny, wiring harness axles, etc, are needed to be used with the GTX/GT-R engines.
