I had a 95 grand am last year that i bought for $50 that needed a head gasket and when I tore it down the block was cracked. So now my friend wants to sell me the exact same car except this one has 155k miles needs a head (still have the one from the first car), water pump and a heater core. Is it worth it with me doing the labor for $150? I have kinda done the head before so I know what I am getting into and the water pump is right there after you take off the head but what about the heater core? Any opinions would be great.

The car is worth the money but with 155K miles it may not last too long even if you put a new head on it. I would save a few bucks and look for a used engine with less miles and put the labor into that.

I would think if you rebuilt the motor it would be fine (and the transmission too lol), but for all that work it wouldn't be worth it, so I'd do like what GTP dad said :p

It all comes down to maintenance by the previous owner(s) and luck. My 95 went to 270k miles when I got rid of it, and its still being driven, and I had the dohc quad. Would I do it? Yes, but I wouldn't be upset if I only got a year out of the car before something major died. I'm also anal about maintenance items like oil changes, coolant services, things like that.

Well im not to sure about the maintenance but im not going to keep just fix it and sell it. Im just wondering with a new top end if it would add to the longevity of the car or im just wasting the $100 in parts and the hours of labor. From what I have heard about these quad 4's is head gasket issues and cooling issues which would both be addressed. So is it still not/worth it?
