Are you refering to the axle tube brakets?
If so they are steel.

The carrier housing is cast.
The tubes ar steel.
Steel and cast do not weld together good.:grinyes:
The steel axel tubes are press fitted into the carrier housing.
The weld hole in the carrier housing is just a hole to hold the weld on the tube.
It is like welding a round dial pin on the tube.
It is not actually a weld to the carrier.
Just a dial pin welded in the hole to hold tube in place.
If it has torn out the the tubes and housing may be twisted.
If it does not hld this time I would replace it with a good used housing or complete rear end.
Good luck
