has anyone experimented with putting in a different engine. any suggestions as to what might fit with the least amount of mod., looking for more performance and hp. or if there are any aftermarket parts that someone has found useful. any suggestions are appreciated

The engine in the villager is the same engine that is found in the maxima. If you want performance you will need to make your own modifications as there are no aftermarket companys that make what you are looking for.

You can gain about 30hp from intake and exhaust mods, I got that tip from the pathfinder guys. If I was serious, I'd pull the exhaust manifolds and port them, and then either heavily modify the stock air box or ditch it in favor of a cold air tube setup with a cone filter. The resonator tube in the bottom of the airbox would be the first thing to go and I'd plug the hole, and that would be my simple mod #1.
If I was really serious, I'd port the heads, exhaust manifolds, upper and lower intake, install a cold air kit, and a dual exhaust system with an X-pipe. If I were to go stark raving insane, the stock exhaust manifolds have the perfect flange to mount up a turbo. :D
Then again, I have a 300ZX with a 300hp+ V30DET parked around back...hmmmm :D
