Thick white smoke on startup

I have a 1987 Caprice it's been running fine, got a new carb, and new tranny.
But when the car is cold and i start it up it blows thick white smoke for a few seconds. Is this bad??

Also where is a good spot for a kill switch, and which is better fuel cut off or battery cut off?

I've been searching around the forums, i know it's not coolant in the oil so i'm leaning towards the light blue smoke and also it gives a little black smoke then it doesn't smoke at all. But what i cant find is should i take this and get it fixed or will it be fine?

You probably have bad valve stem seals which allows oil over night to leak into the combustion chamber. The repair is not that expensive, best left to a good shop in my opinion.

What Bob said.

If it's not using much oil, and you don't mind the cloud, you can leave it as is as long as it's not smoking while you're driving it.

Mine uses some oil at 168k. I go with 20w-50 in warmer weather and still go through a quart in 1000 miles on the average. In my case, the fix is not worth it and has no bearing on the emissions. My spark plugs are always clean when I change them.

To answer your other questions on the kill switch and cutoffs - unless your car has the 4.3 V6, it will be carbureted and carbureted cars use mechanical fuel pumps. No cutoff possible on the fuel system on these cars (unless, again, it has a V6 in which case it's EFI with electric pump).

The best place to put a kill switch is the place that works best for you. If you're wondering what to run the kill switch from, the BAT lead on the distributor is the best case.

I've done valve seals, they're not bad but getting to them is another story. Just need some specialty tools and a weekend.
