I just bought a 1997 jeep grand cherokee in good condition with 111000 ish miles on it. My dad said that was decent for the year and that it would last me a while. But what do you guys think? How long do jeeps normally last?

Many vehicles will last a long time if the proper maintenance is performed in a timely manner. A lot can depend on how the former owners took car of the vehicle. One problem I can foresee with Jeeps and many 4 wheel drive vehicles is that they may not last as long as similar non 4WD vehicles if the owners had abused them over the years. Some people think 4 WD vehicles are indestructible and can go "anywhere/do anything". Before purchasing such a vehicle I would have it thoroughly checked out by a trusted mechanic to see the condition of the vehicle, paying close attention to the suspension, and drivetrain. A good rule of thumb to figure if a vehicle has more miles than average is to figure around 12 to 15,000 miles/year. If a vehicle averages out more than that, it still may not be much of an issue as that mileage may be mostly highway miles, and the vehicle may have been properly maintained and well taken care of.

Jeep GC seem to have tranny issues. I dunno if they are just weak or if people use them like idiots. Just keep up with regular maintenence and you should be fine. 4WD SUVs usually need more maintenence than most vehicles.
