Marlboro red?

OK, I know this may be a contentious issue, but can anyone clarify if the Marlboro flouro red that was used on the F1 Alfa Romeo 179's of the early 80's was exactly the same colour as that used on the later McLarens (MP4/4's etc)?

I've seen one in the flesh recently and it was really bright, but was probably just repainted in the nearest bright red that was to hand!

TIA

I saw both the Alfa 179 and the McLarens at the Donington Collection Museum. In my opinion I would say the colour was the same.

That's entirely possible, for both cars Steve saw as well: If they were restored in recent years they could be using the same paint even.

Thanks guys!

Any recommended paint? I personally liked the Finishers red then pink clear system as used by Bill Attridge on his award winning MP4/6.

I used the Finishers MP4 red on my McLaren build and although it was good I think when I build another McLaren I'm going to use the Zero basecoats instead. There was a special set of the red and white colours on Hiroboys site earlier in the week but I can't seem to find them now.But you can still get the red and white separately.

White http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_77&products_id=940

Red http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_77&products_id=1478

I sprayed a little test sample of the red and took it to the Donington museum earlier in the year to compare it to the real McLarens and it was a perfect match.I think with it being a basecoat paint as well will have its advantages.Because you are not spraying wet coats to get a gloss and only laying the paint on lightly to build up the colour, there is no chance of the red creeping under the masking tape so you should get perfect masking lines between the white and the red and then you can clearcoat the whole thing in one go.I think it will be easier than the Finishers paints overall.Just my opinion.

Best regards,

Steve.

It does seem to be fairly widely agreed that the Marlboro red used on Mclarens from 1976 to 1996 is RAL3024. However I have no idea if that is the same colour used on early eighties Alfas and more recent Ferraris.
