2000 gmc jimmy hesitations

I have the 4.3L vortec, two wheel drive, and 5sd. When I'm driving down the road, I get these little hesitations like a cylinder is missing or I'm running out of gas. I also have noticed that when accelerating off the line, the power tends to surge. It will be gutless for a bit then take off like a rocket. this started happening last week after I ran out of gas. Any ideas would be helpfull.

Have you changed your fuel filter since you ran out of fuel? Sometimes by running out of fuel, you tend to suck up a lot of garbage from the fuel tanks. Can you check your fuel pressure ?
