gas gauge

I think i have a sending unit going bad, can anyone tell me how much a sending unit cost.

Yes, it is inside of the gas tank.

There was a recall on my year, 97, because of inaccurate readings. I ran out gas twice!!!

Some times when I start the engine the gauge will go to empty (when the tank is full) and stay their and the dash light and the alarm will sound. But if I shut the engine off and restart it it will read right after that.

It might be just the dash gauge sticking....next time it does this...and this is not going to sound real hi-tech....try to jar the gauge by pounding on the dash.

The fuel sender is a seperate component located on the fuel pump/filter assembly. To get it you need to drop the gas tank and remove the fuel pump.

I've got a '98 and I and I too have a strange and complicated issue in this regard...

My gas gauge will read 'Empty' on a regular basis. Occasionaly, my whole dash goes dead. (that's when I SMACK it. So far, that's worked. I know. I'm a bit lazy...)

If it's just the fuel gauge that's acting up, I'll correct it by:
1- Noticing that it's not correct [you should know how much gas you've got...]
2- Smacking the dash area all over in disgust
3- Put the beast in neutral, coasting @ any MPH, and cut the key to the OFF position. (BE CAREFUL!!!) :nono:
4- Resart. (@ speed[s]) This resets my fuel gauge for some reason, I don't know...

I just finished replacing the sending unit (Chrysler calls it a "level unit") in my 2000 XJ. The sending unit cost $32 plus change and comes with a float, ring, gasket, and two new hanger bolts with nuts (only two). Takes a bit of work to get the old nuts off the hanger bolts, finally sawed them off but you have to worry about the nuts/hanger that also holds up one side (passenger) of the exhaust shield. If you cut the hanger bolt off you still have to get the nuts apart to release the shield. I had to cut the shield away from the nuts/bolts/hanger and then mig weld it back together after getting the nuts apart in a vise (mine had two nuts, back-to-back in locking fashion and the threads/nuts were rusted so bad they would only come apart using brute force in a vise - not enough room to get a really good amount of force while hanging). I replaced all the nuts with stainless so if there is ever a next time they shouldn't be so hard to get off - also coated hanger bolt threads with Rustoleum paint.
